Jeff Clyne who died on November 16 aged 72, had a reputation among British jazz musicians as the country's finest all-round bass player.

Along with a fine technique, incisive tone and unshakeable rhythmic sense, Clyne commanded a unique range of styles, from swing and even cabaret accompaniment at one extreme, to the avant garde at the other. In later life he discovered a gift for teaching and instructed many of today's young professionals.

I agree with the article. Currently, there is a series being aired on NPR (
[link]) Called "The Jazz Loft Project". It's about a loft in NYC's
flower district (6th/7th ave & the 20's) which was owned by W.Eugene Smith,
a photographer and jazz fan who wired his loft on 6th ave to record

For those who are interested, I saw Frank Vignola and his quintet the
other night in Lafayette, IN. What an incredibly talented group of
musicians he has. They played a lot of Django, or Django-inspired
pieces along with some original tunes. Frank doesn't seem to get a lot

There is always a tinge of sentimental pride in my friend Roger's voice when he recalls the story of how he was humiliatingly mugged as a teenager in his home town of New York. Thanks Juan. I guess the caps came from my sample name. But that's
what I wanted to know. But the sample people got it wrong. Those
samples are not bowed to the best of my knowledge. I haven't used
them in a long while.
