The letter system of identification was devised to give each key its own
special spelling so that it could be discussed individually. When I went to
school, the fact that in general structure, all twelve keys were identical
wasn't presented as a rock bottom basis for ear training. We had to wade
through the notational system which had its own individual theory that had
nothing to do with the sounds. After those who didn't know it already waded
through it, then it was applied to the sounds. This is a case of intellect
first, sound, its feeling and sense of direction second.
We learned to speak English by ear first, and that was followed by the
written word. When you saw "cat" on the page, you already knew what a cat
was. Because of this, when you saw the word, the image, smell, and purrrr
of the cat popped into your consciousness. This is why Rosetta Stone is such
a popular program for learning a new language today. It shows the image of
what the word represents. As we read we see a visual story in our
imagination.
I realize fully that the notational system is an established inescapable
fact. In order to function on a professional level you have to master it.
Once you do, a marvelous legacy of music from every culture in the world is
open to you. Therefore, Mastering the notational system, and the letter
identification of notes is a must. I know that Bobby and John will at least
agree with me on this one
Tonal Center or One Chords are 1 3 5 for major, 1 b3 5 for minor, and
this is how your ear hears them. In the same tonality, you hear a Five
Chord as 5 7 2 4 of the same tonality, and this is why it's called the
Five Chord. This is a much better blueprint for learning to hear. I'm
allowed to promote my website on this forum because it's a free site. I'm
not trying to make a buck here, and everybody is free to agree with me, and
hopefully get some benefit from my site, or tell me I'm full of shit. At
least it promotes a musically productive discussion.
