Don't classical guitarists do arrangements in different keys? I read somewhere that part of arranging a classical piece is to find a key where the open strings work for you. It's a good idea with jazz chord melody too, often the difference between smooth time and that herky jerky stuff we sometimes hear from jazz players.

Key doesn't make that much difference to me in the way a song sounds, not that I have such a great ear.  It can make a difference in the comping, if you can't easily get the voicing you want in the register you're playing in.

I play a lot of Brazilian music written by guitarists -- and there are sounds that simply don't transpose well on guitar.

I've also read that some musicians have something called synesthesia which associates color and key -- I'd guess that key makes more of a difference to them.

I already have an "open" Grado SR-60 that I like and keep for computer and
hi-fi. I was using Sony MDR 7502 "Professional" for guitar but it broke
after only 2 years. I have tried Sennheiser HD 435 that I dislike totally
and returned to the store.

I am looking for closed headphones.

Hi Guys,

It seems that most of you live with tolerant spouses, or maybe live alone...
You don't seem to be concerned a bit by headphones...
;~)

Anyway, my problem is solved, very satisfied with Ultrasone HFI 450 bought
and tried today....

Cheers,
Marc

It would be good to listen to as many as you can. If you have that
luxury try to listen to some of the Grado Labs phones. They are
mostly open back cans so they may not be the best for live recording
depending on your signal path and near by open mics. They have ton's
of detail, at least the SR 325s do, in reverb tails and high and
stereo image. In the end it's what your ears tell you.
