Anyone still on this email list now?

FYI

I see that there is a new O'Reilly book: Java Performance, The
Definitive Guide by Scott Oaks. Hmmm....

Hello

It is with great sadness that I am sending you my last User Group
Newsletter. I have been made redundant and will stop working for
O’Reilly on May 20th. No it is not the end of the User Group Programme
as my colleague Helen Codling (HelenC...@oreilly.co.uk) will be
looking after you in the future.

Should you wish to contact me personally, you can reach me on
josett...@gmail.com. I will keep my twitter account @josetteg and
the blog www.josetteorama.com.

Thank you for working with me for so many years. Hopefully we can meet
again when I will be wearing a different hat.

It’s goodbye for now!

Kindest regards

Josette

Hi Peter,

if everyone who was on this list 5 years ago is as busy as you and me and didn't unsubscribe, then all 200 are probably still on it!

Go on, organise another meet-up, you know you want to!

re the O'Reilly book, I haven't seen it. Is it aimed squarely at low latency and multi-threading?

Cheers
Adam

Hi Adam

http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920028499.do

I don't know for sure about this book, since it is so new, I haven;t
seen it in a bookstore yet. At least, Scott Oaks works at Oracle and
it should have very good information on the garbage collector.
Everyone that I respect says porogramming in Java multi-threading is
not the way to go. Russel Winder pushes concurrent sequential
processes (CSP) GPars and Groovy. Other people point to Akka (Scala
and Java). Most definitely, you want to build software using Java 7 or
8 Executors instead. Venkat Subramanian is good author in the JVM
concurrency stuff.

Probably, we can do some dinner in the city towards the end of next month.
I can do Wednesday 29th May and Wednesday 5th June.
Let me know if you are interested.

Yes I'm interested. Either would do.

Does the Javawug still exist i.e. is registered?

Does the JAVAWUG exists?

No, sadly, not as an official Java User Group. It used to be
registered as a JUG in the old Sun Microsystems extranet sites
(java.net), but now that data is defunct.

Gosh! It was 10 years ago almost when I was contracting at Credit
Suisse that I thought it would be interesting to meet other people
from London, who also were developing Struts applications. I had
decided to go JavaOne and thought it would great to meet other
travellers ... Our first get together was Waxy O'Connor's pub in Soho
...

I will think of some locations in the mean time. Off the top of my
head, perhaps we get together be somewhere near Oxford Street or
Edgware Road (middle eastern cuisine)

PS: I actually work near Victoria and Westminster

I just looked back in my emails to find out when that date was that you suggested Pete - looks like I slightly messed that one up.

Do you want to suggest another date and we can put a few more details around it...?

Sorry Adam.
Things have got pretty hectic with my second book and the preparation
for Devoxx UK
I will need to check my schedule and I think a meet-up night with in
the next 2 - 3 weeks or so.
I will give you an announcement next week for sure.

Hello everybody

Sorry for the late notice of this announcement. I have been incredibly busy in June.

Are people free this Thursday evening, 3rd July?

I'm free.

That's said in my normal voice, as opposed to my John Inmann impression.

Hi Peter,

It would be great to meet up again but unfortunately I can't make Thursday. Have a good one, or let us know if any other dates come up.

Hi All

It looks like only Adam and I so far. So that more people could
attend, would it be better to postpone the night for another week
Thursday 10th July?
I realised I have not planned this well so far, it's a bit impromptu.
It would good to get a group of 5 people around initially.

Hi Adam

It looks like it just us so far. Do you think that it is worth still
meeting up or should we both reschedule for a time when other people
can be around?

Other people let me know what is a good night next week.

Wednesday 9th July
Thursday 10th July

are good days for me.

Hi Adam and everyone else

I am really sorry that I have to cancel tonight's meet-up. I have a
parent family thing that needs to be resolved, sadly.

PS: I am conscious that some people are about ready to set off on
their summer holidays, so let us know what evenings in the next two
weeks are good for you to meet up. Please just reply on this list
asap. I think the general idea was to go out for drinks, a few beers,
after work and/or then find a restaurant in central London to dine in.
I suppose it feels like the old fashion days circa 2004 / 2005 when
the group was so very new.

Anyway, wish you well, have a productive day, all.

I think we should reschedule and try to drum up some off the old boys like Phil.

Next week or the week after?
