Hi - Also, please add consideration of the West Chamberlain Creek area
to
the agenda. Brad and I are at least theoretically committed to doing a
site
review there that could result in a preliminary recommendation. I am
already booked Jan 6 and Jan 14. Kathy

Subject: Request for a Landscape Committee Meeting in January
Dear Landscape Committee Members,
I'm writing to all as our Chairmanship is somewhat ill-defined at the
moment. If a majority of the committee wants to meet, we should be able
to
arrange how to make it occur. My thought is to schedule it in
mid-January,
safely after the holidays but before the next JAG meeting.
I would like to meet on the following subjects:
1. Consider adding the area encompassed by the Volcano 2 THP (and a
little
section to the east that also has significant unentered/high-density
big
trees to our late seral designation. This will create a substantial
contiguous area for late seral management, adding in some important
stands
of old unentered second growth. I discussed this at the JAG meeting
that
discussed the Camp 6 THP, which is within this area.
2.
3. I have attached a map of the area showing the adjacent allocations
to
Older Forest an Late Seral. Also attached is a page from my review of
the
Camp 6 THP that shows the tree-density in this area.
4.
5.
6. Discuss performing an "inventory" of natural disturbances in areas
of the
forest that have been undisturbed since the initial entries in the
late
1800s or early 1900s. Considerable emphasis has occurred in JAG
discussions
of attempting to mimic natural disturbances in proposed silvicultures
for
forest management. Jackson Forest contains the best possible
information on
disturbances in Jackson State Forest in recovering second growth stands
--
but many areas available for doing an inventory are slated to become
disturbed very quickly. This year North Fork Spur and part of Brandon
Gulch
were entered. Next year the remainder of Brandon Gulch, Camp 3, Camp 6
and
South Whiskey Springs will be entered. There will be no remaining
undisturbed areas in the north central region other than the small
reserve
in Camp 3.
7.
8. If the committee feels that gathering information on natural
disturbances
in Jackson is important, it needs to recommend ASAP that this be done
before
the next harvest in areas slated for logging.
9.
10.
11. Review the allocations to date and the implications for the amount
of
area that is slated for late seral management. My initial review, based
on
the 2008 MP, indicates that the amount of late seral in contiguous
areas,
that is, other than in stream zones that are distributed throughout
the
forest, equals only about 5,000 acres or 10% of the forest. Late seral
in
stream zones adds another 11%. See the attached chart.
12.
13.
14. Developing standards and procedures to ensure that aesthetic
