under the headng of wtf!  How much does your rudder weigh? I think I got a hernia from lifting the "lightweight rudder and carbon post" as it says in the J92 spec sheet. My 105 rudder was at least half the weight!!

Unscientifically, mine weighs about 50 +/- 10lbs. I weighed it two years ago and can't recall if/where i wrote it down. It's more in the ballpark of a 5-gallon water jug (40lbs) than a bag of rock salt (80lbs).

Did you weigh yours while you had it out? It's a good way to spot problems early, too.

Well then , maybe I am more concerned than I need to be. Thinking back when I had the 105 rudder out for a new barrier coat, it was 15 years ago. Maybe age has caught up with me.

No, rethinking this , the rudder weighed more like the bag of rocks…definitely more than 40lb, way more.

That sounds like my former J/33's rudder.  We hauled out the boat one time and the rudder wouldn't stop dripping - it was full of water.  About 6.5 boat bucks later it (and the shaft) were better than new.

On our prior J/92 Forum, an owner posted about the two halves of his rudder splitting apart - which gave me something to think about while I was trying to go to sleep during the solo Hawaii race.

has there been a definitive answer to this question?  I removed mine the other day, there was some water it seems to have drained but I would like to get a somewhat accurate original weight before I install again.

I took my rudder home at the end of last season, and it weighed in at 51.5 pounds. After standing upside down all winter, it shed about 5 pounds of water.

I think some will come in the top of the post, particularly if the cockpit is immersed (while racing hard, natch). I suspect also that the joint between the post and top surface of the rudder may also be allowing water intrusion in my case.

We had a poor repair to the skin below the waterline which caused some of the penetration. I also believe it come in at the top of the rudder.
