King Harbor Spring One Design

March 31st 2012

Three J 92’s showed up for the King Harbor Yacht Club Spring One Design Race on March 31st, Turn Key (Don Hedges) , H2Blue (Ross Moore) and Double Down ( Brian Kerr). The event took place off the Southern California Coast between the Hermosa and Manhattan Pier. The wind was a little fickle with about 12 knots at the start of the first race. When the first J 92 was within 200 yards of the finish of the 2 leg windward leeward course the wind shut off and it took over ½ hour to complete the 200 yards. After over an hour delay the wind finally came back and we were able to finish the next 2 races.

I Never thought that we would have 3 J 92’s racing one design in Southern California. Racing boat for boat is sure a lot more fun than worrying about PHRF ratings even with just 3 boats. Our thanks to King Harbor Yacht Club for putting on the event.

I have attached some picture on the boats.

That's great Don - racing the way it was meant to be.

Parachute Woman, Relentless, Healy, Lisa Ann, and Puka Wai: that
could be us.

Shooting Star, Pressure Drop, Hound Dog, Risk, Quetzal, Blue Angel, Zut Alors, that could be us!

Todd,

We should try to get our own start the at YRALIS Championships in Aug.   When do you splash?

I'm hoping to splash at the end of this month. Waiting on a new mast. :-)

That's not slipping by either. Story? Sparcraft? Masthead spinny
halyard?

It's a boring story. Discovered a permanent bend aft wards of about 6-8 degrees just above the hounds when I decommissioned the boat last autumn.

Hall Spars is making a new one for me. It should be delivered at the end of March. Errr, ummm, wait! It's April already?

No modifications from standard.

Many of the local 105's have that permanent bend but I didn't know our
masts could get it. I'll need to watch for that.

Parachute Woman (#47) has a Sparcraft mast with masthead spinny
halyard.

Probably worth making sure you have a limiter on the backstay adjust tackle set to some reasonable point. Without it, well... ;-)

Hey Guys,

I just bought #47 Parachute Woman, renaming her "Secret agent man"..
Don't ask ;-)

The boat has a newer sparcraft mast with a masthead kite as Bob
mentioned. Anyone else have the same setup?

I would be up for one design in the bay.. although I am not sure I
will get away with flying a masthead kite..

That's great news Chet! I decided not to hound you about your deal; I
just hoped it was moving along.

I talked to Norman about the masthead kite and we agreed that as long
as you don't max out the kite area, we'll call it even.

Where are you keeping the boat?

By the way, I am now a stowaway on the J92 forum, after many (8) years of
fun J92 and J92S racing on the UK south coast out of Brighton. My J92S
REDEYE has now been sold and will be heading to Benidorm in Spain, will it
find any pals there??

I am now racing a J105 - REDEYE 6, but will still try to chat with you guys
re J - things in general.

We have our Easter regatta coming up where we will be up against J109, 111
and 97's so be interesting to see how old and new perform

Does anyone know of a J105 forum??

Best Regards

Pete

Congrat's Pete. It's not as active as ours (at least this last couple

Thanks for all your help and advice. Short term I am going to keep it
in Sausalito but will probably move it to Treasure island so it's a
little closer to where I live in the city.

Looking to take it out very soon after taking care of a couple of
projects.

By way of introduction, Chet is a long-time local J/24 OD racer who
bought a big boat and went cruising. (We always liked the name of his
J/24: "Nixon Was Cool...") He had his cruise, sold the big boat in
OZ and is back on the Bay.

Chet went sailing on Ragtime! several weeks ago, pulled off a couple
solo gybes of the 1.5A with the boat on autopilot, sailed upwind at
almost 6.5 knots for awhile and listened to me gush about the boat.

A few days later #47 was listed and Chet was on it like white on rice.

Folks

Just sold my J92S from UK to Spain

I have a couple of sails that may be of interest to J92S owners

HYDE reacher spinnaker.  In 3/4 ounce RED.  New shape we developed for a masthead reacher with HYDE.  Only used 3-4 times

HYDE Blade No1  Heavy cut full size (inside shrouds) headsail in GPL Carbon panel.  Great 12-20kt headsail.  On hanks.  Rarely used, great weapon in the sail inventory

SF Bay boats: I'm planning on doing the Vallejo race the first weekend in May. If we can get five boats to register we'd get our own start. Anyone else up for a little one design racing?
