I'm putting together a shopping list for a mainsheet system with a
fine and gross tune. Anybody possess a quick list of components
required for this upgrade? I like the system with that includes a
continuous line for the traveler.

I thought this info was already posted, but a search of the group
doesn't come up with anything specific.

Andy -
I went through this last year and found there are many ways to do fine/
gross trim on the boat, but it comes down to what you want/like. Check
out the harken web site for some ideas. I don't think there's a right/
wrong way, but I think you need to look at where crew will be, who'll
be trimming main, etc
My boat came with a two speed system which was nice because you never
ran out of fine tuning length. But managing the line tail was almost
someone's full time job on deck. Last year I redid the hw and now I'm
using the same setup as Thin Man. The nice part about it is being
able to fine trim from both sides easily. But like the backstay and
trav cleats mounted at your knees, you're pulling up instead of
towards you.
I don't have any pictures to share off hand. There's prob something on
the Thin Man web site

Andy, whatever you decide, i strongly recommend the Maffioli Swiftcord 10mm rope. You don't need any gloves anymore. That's fine stuff and worth every penny. I am using it since 2 years now to control the main sheet. For the fine tuning i am using the same in 8mm with different color. I have no pics because the boat still having artifical hibernation.

Assuming this system is composed of Harken carbos, I simply need the part #s
is you've got them. As for pulling up, I'll simply need to do more bicep
and core exercises. Grrrr!

:1/16:1 GROSS/FINE

This powerful gross-trim/fine-tune cascading system allows crew to use the 4:1 gross-trim for most trimming and the 16:1 fine-tune for precise adjustments.

We have been using these Spinlock cleats on the main-sheet system

They make freeing and jamming much easier, which takes the fatigue away for the poor mainsheet man!!

Easy to fit if you get the right ones too!!

Not cheap, but well worth the money

Second thar. We use px1012 from spinlock on our 105. Definately better, though this is thr older model than the pxr and is getting harder to source

Making a continuous traveller is easy, either splash out one some longer string and make enough slack in the control ends/middle, or just knot the two together, that way a quick flick on the lazy end releases the leeward cleat

Or invest in a windward sheet Harken car, bit over the top for a short J92 track, some 105 come fitted with these, very clever!!

I had the 4:1/16:1 (to cams on the side tanks) as shown in the Harken
catalog, and I recently took it off. I found I wasn't using the fine
tune and wanted more power back on the gross tune (primary
mainsheet). The stock 92 came with 6:1 and no fine tune, which was a
lot of sheet to pull coming around the leeward mark. Now I have 5:1,
no fine tune and it seems to be a good compromise. Caveat - I trim my
own main.

I agree with using Swiftcord for these control lines (traveler and
fine tune if you have it). Despite the advertising it DOES soak up
water but it's a great line to hold. A place to save money on this
otherwise expensive line is Hall Spars' scrap rope page.

The 4:1/16:1 setup in the Harken catalog shows three eye straps to
hold the fine-tune blocks near the centerline - that's six holes
through your cored cockpit floor. Instead I used a Wichard
"Watertight U-Bolt" which was enough larger to take the three bullet
blocks and required only two holes that were better sealed. (Still
overdrill/epoxy/redrill and bed well.) Fun to spot a hole on either
side of the center support underneath. My boat was built on a Monday
so it's not on center!

I pro sailor who joined me for a recent race said I should put strops
on the boom to attach the mainsheet blocks, so the mainsheet could be
shorter. It could be a head-banger but that's another thought -
common on dinghies.

Regarding the Spinlock PX-type cleats, when you go from 6:1 to 4:1 on
the gross tune you will need an easier way to release the sheet - it's
a lot more loaded at 4:1. The old style PXB0812 was the tits because
it accepted up to 12mm line (so your 10mm mainsheet ran smoothly
through it) and it was designed for exactly this application. I had
it for a long time and it worked great. (You still need to use the
front of your foot to lock it down.)

After all the bolt leak problems and cockpit recoring, I installed the
larger "Offshore" swivel cam and the PXB0812 wouldn't work with it.
Also, the new Spinlock PXR will only take 10mm line (barely). Try to
find an old PXB0812 (E-Bay?) if you can. Okay, yeah I have two - but
I'm not ready to part with them yet...

We added two 6-8 inch strops on our J92 main, it does reduce the amount of
rope especially to heave in on a gybe, and they didn't seem to clip anyone!!

Any chance you could delete your long "signature block" when posting

I don't have the part numbers, but I used lewmar racing 60s and harken
carbo 40mm for the fine. I'm using about 35-40' of salsa line for the
fine adjustment

Those old Spinlock PX units were nice. Will never understand why they
redid them to handle a smaller line.... Anyone try the Harken Nash
Trigger Cleat? The guys at APS say it's good, but haven't tried it
yet. The standard 150 cleat can sometimes be hard under mail sheet

Andy, my 92s has a Harken 6:1/12:1 gross/fine system that works very
well. The gross systen has a 57 mm Carbo fiddle block on both the boom
and the traveler and a 57 mm single on the boom. I also have a
hardly-used Spinlock PX cleat sitting in my basement if anyone wants
it. I found this cleat easy to open in heavy air but difficult to
cleat in light air.

Mine is 6:1 coarse with a 4:1 fine on top of that (24:1 net). The sheet goes from the block/cleat mounted on the cockpit sole up to a single Carbo 57 on the boom, then to a double Carbo 57 on the traveler and double Carbo 57 on the boom (separate bail forward of the single).

The "standing" end of the coarse sheet is attached to the fine tune double block (Carbo 40). The fine tune runs from cam cleats and Carbo 29's above the traveler ends to a pair of Carbo 40's hanging off the central bail on the traveler car to the double 40 on the end of the coarse sheet to a single 40 on the becket of the double 57 also on the bail. The fine tune rig is basically identical to the backstay fine tune.

HAR2600 Harken 57 mm Carbo Single / Swivel 1
HAR2602 Harken 57 mm Carbo Double / Swivel 1
HAR2603 Harken 57 mm Carbo Double / Swivel / Becket 1
HAR2638 Harken 40 mm Carbo Double / Swivel 1
Harken 40 mm Carbo Single / Swivel 3
HAR349 Harken 29 mm Carbo Stand-up / fixed 2
HAR356 Harken Cam-Matic / Fairlead 2

I don't have the part numbers for the 40mm singles because they were reused from the backstay fine tune when I replaced that whole setup with Carbos.

Hope you don’t mind but I took the liberty of scrounging the attached photo that details the top of the fine tune/course tune.  BTW.. Hi Max,

I used the SPXR0206T for the fine tune and the SPXR0810T for the 'normal' mainsheetcontrol. They fit straight in on the mountingholes on the Harken swivelbase (the SPXR0810T that is, the small one is mounted on a Ronstan block).

Hi Max,

This is what Spinlock says: You can replace existing cam cleats with the T-Series and swivel bases with the SW-Series. Hole patterns are designed to match popular cam cleats and swivel bases so you don't have to drill new holes.

Hi Max,

I use 8mm Dyneema for the mainsheet and 6mm Dyneema for the fine tune, both Marlow ropes. Spinlock says 10mm will fit, never tried though.

Ciao Dick

Bob,

Do you have a picture of your main sheet system you could post?

Trying to get this sorted out on #77.

George, scroll down the forum to Off Watch's thread in April, titled "Updating Backstay . . ."  There are a couple photos of my current mainsheet setup in there.

FYI, I plan to replace the big double block at the bottom with a fiddle block (which I think was stock).  This will add slightly more friction but I'm finding that a bit of the tail can get trapped under the corner of that block.  If that happens just before a crossing situation where you need a big ease, it could be a problem.

Just to rock your J/92 world, I got the dodger and solar panels out of storage yesterday to see if everything still worked . . .

That thread is actually titled "I would like to update backstay . . . " (etc.)  It was hard to find.
