Does anyone have this setup, with two cams on the swivel base? (See
deck spec section of Harken's catalog.) Or have you raced on a boat
with this setup? Comments?

I've had the stock 6:1, then for a long time a 4:1 with 4:1 fine tune,
now a 5:1 with no fine tune. I'm thinking of trying Harken's 4:1/8:1
Two-Speed system. It's a big deal for single-handing since I'm always
trimming my own main and it blows pretty good here.

Thanks.

Bob,

You should give serious thought to the fine tune setup on Thin Man. It's perfect for both shorthanded and fully-crewed racing, it is really easy to install, and doesn't obsolete any of the standard mainsheet tackle.

Cheers,
Todd

Todd, I suspect that's what I had before - is it the 4:1/16:1 setup?
I found I rarely used the fine tune because I had too much line to
pull with one arm.

It's 6:1 coarse and 4:1 fine.

Yeah, that's going to be the same problem. It reminded me of sailing
El Toros when we'd catch the mainsheet in our teeth coming around the
leeward mark. My dentist doesn't recommend that on my J/92 . . .

Anybody sail with Harken's two-speed system?

Todd, do you have a photo of your 6:1 (with or without fine-tune)? I
took that off 8-9 years ago and I can't remember the block
arrangement. Maybe I'll just do that for awhile (with no fine tune).

My new club has a long, usually puffy reach at the beginning and end
of every race (to get out the river and then back in). Also, I'm in
transition from "The New Hotness" to "Old and Busted" and my arms are
really feeling it.

Nothing handy and I'll probably forget to dig it up tonight when I'm home. It's easy enough to describe.

From your hand, through swivel cam and block, up to single on boom, down to double w/becket on trav, up to double on boom, down to 2nd sheave on trav, up to 2nd sheave on boom, down to becket on trav. I have two SS bails on the boom, but you could do it with straps or lashings if you want to go light.

Fine tune is added between standing end of sheet and becket on trav block. Add a smaller double to the sheet, a single on the becket, and two singles lashed to either side of the base fitting on the traveler. Then add a single on each side of the cockpit sidewall just above the traveler (level with the add'l blocks on trav) and a cam cleat at the top of the sidewall (each side).

Thanks Todd. Are the doubles fiddle blocks? Seems like mine were.

I still have the hardward installed for the fine tune to the cockpit
sides so it would be easy to put it back on - I just didn't use it
much. Yours is 24:1 so you need to pull 24' of fine tune control to
bring the boom in one foot - I'm trying to avoid all that spaghetti!

And, yes - I'm from Italy : whats wrong with the spaghetti ?

Thanks Max. Too much spaghetti is one of the reasons I'm in
transition to "Old and Busted" - I had it for dinner last night as a
matter of fact!

I had the fine tune on the back end of the mainsheet purchase, led to
cams on the side tanks. Apparently Todd has the same setup. Yours
looks more like stock J/105 mainsheet - they must have changed it for
the J/92S.

We ran with a couple of 12 inch rope strops off the boom, which reduces the amount of mainsheet needed. Also put. Spinlock jammer on the main cleat. Which makes releasing and locking a lot easier

They're all standard (side-by-side) doubles.

I use the coarse (6:1) to get it all the way in and then play the traveler and fine tune (24:1) as required.

Because the fine tune is 24:1, it's important for it to have as much range as possible. The strops reduce coarse sheet length at the expense of fine tune throw.

My coarse sheet length is not an issue because I have the swivel cam behind the traveler. This keeps the jib trimmer playground relatively clear.

Not one thing wrong with it. Great excuse for a bottle of red.

Bob,
One optional detail with the 4, 5 or 6 to one with a 4:1 (and the 4:1 can be 2:1 too ya know) is top put a snap shackle on the connection twixt the coarse sheet and the fine tune tackle.

In lighter conditions, the 6:1 can be used and if it hooting, like here last weekend, hook up the fine tune.
Ping me direct for more explanations, as necessary.
Off to get my pasta and Bolonese (sp?) sauce
