I recently noticed that the version avaiable from
https://github.com/gnachman/iTerm2 mentions support for italic fonts in
various commit messages, so I decided to give it a try.

However, to no avail... I was using vim and hi Comment cterm=italic to
test the feature with Italic text allowed option set under
Profiles->Text, however, it seemed to have no effect. No matter if the
option is set or not, all that the cterm=italic option in vim does is in
vert the colors. Am I perhaps missing something? My TERM is
xterm-256color, if that matters, the font was courier new (which
includes bold and italic).

Thanks,
John

The secret is described at https://code.google.com/p/iterm2/issues/detail?id=391#c13, and in particular at https://gist.github.com/sos4nt/3187620. You have to create an italics supporting terminfo. Hopefully the final release will ship with one by default.

So, the easiest way to test is echo `tput sitm`italics`tput ritm`.

I'm leery of promulgating a variant of the xterm terminfo since it doesn't seem like xterm will ever support italics, but I'm not sure what the best way is to get italic support out there is. Any ideas?

Has there been any developments here on the recommended way to get italic working?

The best thing to do would be to get more terminal emulators to support italics and then see if Thomas Dickey would consider updating his terminfo file.
