Can you pipe a command's output to iterm Toolbelt?

Will piping, or in general, extending the functionality of the Toolbelt be possible? Polling/etc. would be good.

Some functionality I can envision:
  • display git status or other VC status
  • display current directory contents
  • display console error messages, etc.
  • cron/automated job success/failure messages

I'd like to do something like this, but the API for it isn't clear. I
think a bit of scripting on the user's part may be necessary since
there's no standard way to do this besides running a background job
that periodically prints some info surrounded by a proprietary escape
code (but that's unreliable if another program tries to output
something at the same time). I'd love to hear other people's thoughts
on this.

Sounds good. Pathfinder has a similar "Toolbelt"/drawer which does something like this, but I'm not a fan of the flow/integration.
