dpkg e file status

Ciao
dopo aver fatto un dpkg -P di alcuni pacchetti i cui file di conf erano
rimasti appesi al sistema (come da dpkg -l |grep ^rc) al primo apt-get
search ho ottenuto questo errore:

prx:~# aptitude search mc
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

sostituendo il file status con status.old invece torna tutto a posto.

Cosa ho fatto di sbagliato con dpkg ? Piu' che altro per non tornare a
ricaderci.

ci sono ricaduto ma non so perche' :(
ora sto cercando nel man come ricreare il file status in modo coerente
con i pacchetti installati pero' non ho capito perche' ci sono ricaduto,
suggerimenti (o sgridate) ?
