Subject: Mel Martin Plays benny Carter & Joe Henderson

          Hi friends;

This Sunday my quartet and I will be performing Benny Carter's music at the
Stockmarket in Sacramento, CA (details below). As many of you may know, I
was closely associated, both professionally and personally, over many years.
He would have been ninety-six years of age on Sunday so I want to perform
his music in honor of him. Benny Carter passed away July 12, 2003 and left a
huge legacy of influence among many generations of musicians. His
compositions are noted for their highly melodic structures and are favored
by many musicians such as Phil Woods, Herb Geller and Jimmy Heath among many
others. The Stockmarket is a great place to hear this music if you are in
the Sacramento area. You will need to call the number below for
reservations. We hope to see you there.

Sunday, August 8, 2004 - MEL MARTIN QUARTET @ The Stockmarket Bar and
Grille, 8887 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA (916) 361-0709, 5-8PM $8 w/ Jeffrey
Burr - guitar, Emmanuel Vaughn - Lee - bass and Jeffrey Marrs - drums

This performance will celebrate the late Benny Carter's 96th birthday. He
passed away on July 12, 2003 but his music lives on. Many of his fine
compositions such as When Lights Are Low, Key Largo, Souvenir, Summer
Serenade, A Walkin' Thing, Only Trust Your Heart and others will be
performed.

NEW PROJECT!

Friday and Saturday Evenings - October 1&2, 2004 - MEL MARTIN and the TENOR
CONCLAVE at Jazz at Pearl's featuring Craig Handy & Tim Armacost - tenors,
Mark Levine - piano, Rob Fisher - bass, Akira Tana - drums performing the
Music of Joe Henderson. Shows at 8:30 & 11PM $15, 256 Columbus Ave (at
Broadway)
San Francisco, CA 94133, (415) 291-8255

The Tenor Conclave is a project that Bay Area reedman Mel Martin has dreamed
of for a long time. In the conclave band he has gathered some of the
foremost tenor saxophonists of the day, along with an all-star rhythm
section, to focus on the repertoire of the great saxophonists of the past.
The idea of such a band is not new having been done before by artists such
as John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Red Holloway,
Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Hank Mobley, Johnny Griffin, Eddie Lockjaw
Davis, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and others. The combination of forceful jazz tenor
saxophonists is an exciting and irresistible combination of talents that
are, at once, competitive and yet exudes a high level of camaraderie. The
first project is The Music of Joe Henderson who Mel Martin played and
recorded with extensively.
