What is a good host with good support for Ruby on Rails that requires MySQL, RubyGems and Passenger?

Thank you very much for your help!

Hi, Aliza.  You wrote:

This might not be quite what you're looking for, but I've been experimenting with Heroku (http://www.heroku.com/) over the last few weeks, and have been quite impressed.  They use PostgreSQL (but the odds are that this doesn't matter, and they keep it pretty invisible ), and I have no idea what they're running as a server.  And they require that you use Git for version control.

But they're free for starter and small sites, and the prices for larger sites seem quite reasonable.

If you're looking for a more traditional answer to your question, I have a client who is currently using Railsmachine, and they seem to be more than reasonable.  You might want to give them a shot, too!

It depends very much on what are your needs. What are you going to use
it for? development? staging? production?
how many users etc.

If its just for development and you are *very* tight on budget then
you might consider shared hosting, but I
can't really comment on this since I never used it. It is usually pain
in the butt to use and is since you
don't have control over the system you might have weird dependency
problems, wait for ages for
upgrades etc. I don't recommend it.

You should probably go with VPS. there are tons of options here with
different price ranges. Some come with Rails stuff pre-installed,
but I personally prefer a bare bone Linux which I manage myself. If
you don't have preferences I recommend you
go with Ubuntu server edition. Almost anything you can think of is a
simple command line away.

VPS pricing usually goes by the memory. The low range is usually about
20$/month.
Some VPS providers to start:

http://www.linode.com/
http://www.slicehost.com/

Both are good, I've seen some accounts on the net about linode giving
more bang for the buck though.
