Abstract
The R statistical programming language is a powerful tool for data analysis. With many features it has a reputation of being difficult to master. To quell these notions we will give a short introduction to R, including reading data and visualization using ggplot2. After that we will take a look at the Elastic Net for regularizing high dimensional data and its implementation in R through the glmnet package.

Jared Lander is the owner of JP Lander Consulting, a New York based data science consulting firm. He is an adjunct professor of Statistics at Columbia University, organizer of the New York Open Statistical Programming meetup (formerly the R meetup) and author of “R for Non-Statisticians” due out in mid August.
