If an ancestor came from Maui and settled in Oakland, CA around 1910 - 1915 what port would that have come in through?
Thanks, Janet

Odds are it's San Francisco. Try the San Francisco Passenger collection on Ancestry.com,  or list the person here if you don't have a subscription.

Do they have a San Francisco collection? I've never seen it.

California, Passenger and Crew Lists, 1882-1957

This database is an index to passenger and crew lists of ships and some airplanes arriving in California* between 1882 and 1957. In addition, the names found in the index are linked to actual images of the passenger and crew lists, copied from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) microfilm (see Source Information for specific microfilm series and roll information).

Eric:

I do not have an Ancestry subscription.  Would appreciate you doing a search for this individual and then let me know if anything pops up:

Antonio Rodrigues (aka Antonio Rodriguez)

Departed Hawaii for California probably between 1891 and 1896

May have arrived in California with spouse and child (or children). Spouse’s name would have been Caroline (or Carolina). Children’s names would have been:

Antone (born 1886)

Maria (born 1888)

Manuel (born 1890)

Bibiana (born 1891)

John or Joao (born 1892)

Thanks so much for your help.

Donald,

Marriage records of their children. Shows that Antonio was originally Spanish , some records show Canary Islands. He's Antonio Muniz Rodrigues. She's Carolina de Jesus Silva from Madeira.

Only  records not found were Maria, Gabriel, and Isabella.

Which of these children do you descend from?

Eric:

Thank you so much. Sending me all this info is an extremely kind gesture. I'm grateful.

A little background may help. Antonio Rodrigues (aka Anton Rodrigues and Antonio Mateo Rodrigues) and Caroline Rodrigues (aka Carolina Silva) are my great grandparents. They are interred at Holy Ghost Catholic Cemetery, Kula, Maui. They arrived in the Hawaiian Islands in 1885 on the Dacca out of Madeira. Antonio was not on the manifest when the ship departed Madeira. It's believed he boarded somewhere in South America because there is talk in our family that he worked on the Panama Canal with the first French company under Ferdinand DeLesseps. There are also stories of him being in Brazil and Argentina after DeLesseps went bankrupt. I've yet to discover whether and where the ship stopped in transit despite many years of research.

Antonio and Caroline met on the ship and married a few months after arrival . They lived at Koloa Plantation, Kauai after marrying. I am descended from their first child, Antone, my grandfather, born at Koloa in 1886. The children that followed were Maria (Mary), Manuel, Bibiana, John (aka Joao), Ludvina, Gabriel, Rose (aka Rosa), Isabella (aka Bella), Alfonso and Vincent. Vitals for all these people and many others may be viewed at my family history site:

http://www.bluenestling.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I231&tree=A367

Antonio and Caroline began their married life on Kauai, lived for a short time on the Big Island, and finally settled on Maui where they passed away. Because I've been researching family for many years, I have much information about these people and their descendents, but there are some mysteries.

Mystery One. It's understood through family lore that Antonio and Caroline relocated to the Mainland US around the time of the Hawaiian Revolution. It's believed that the Mainland travel occurred between 1892 and 1896.  I don't know where on the Mainland they landed. I'm told that they "worked in the hop fields" on arrival; and since the San Francisco Bay Area, and particularly the area around Pleasanton, California, was known then as the "Hop Capital of North America", it is likely that they would have landed through San Francisco. They stayed on the Mainland only about a year before returning to Hawaii. All their children were born in the Islands so when this Mainland adventure might have occurred is uncertain. Trying to find some evidence of their arrival in California (or departure from California) is the impetus for me reaching out to you yesterday

Mystery Two. Whether the Dacca stopped enroute to Hawaii from Madeira. If so, where, and did Antonio Rodrigues board at that time.

Mystery Three. ANY information about the birthplace and parentage of Antonio Rodrigues. All documents that I've discovered that refer to birthplace read "Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Canary Islands" and that his nationality is "Spanish". Because the Canaries were part of Spain then, that's probably where he was born; but after many years of searching, I've been unable to turn up more info that might solve the mystery. Still hoping, though.

I have the census info that you sent. The marriage licenses I have not seen before, so they are new additions to my collection. Thanks so much for helping me. If you or others can contribute ideas for solving the mysteries described, I would love to read them.

Thanks again.

Donald Rodrigues

Donald,

Lucky, I live in Pleasanton, just off Hopyard Rd. I also run a Google Group called Portuguese Geneaolgy. This is for all the people who's Portuguese ancestors didn't come from the Azores. I have members researching mainland Portugal, Madeira, Brazil, Cape Verde, Argentina, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Goa, Angola, Mozambique, US, and Canada.

Since I live here, I specialize in California connections. There's a huge amount of online material available for the San Francisco,  Bay Area.

I'll check my Pleasanton directories and get back to you.
