Hello everyone,

It's time to look back on what happened in 2012 on the copyright/IP front. Please let me know if you are interested in contributing to the 2012 Annual. As always, I welcome your ideas for topics, and as always, I've filed away some topics over the course of the year for those of you who want to write for the Annual but don't know what you want to write about.

Possible topics:

1. Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement
 https://www.eff.org/issues/tpp

2. The rise of MOOCs and IP

3. Jonah Lehrer plagiarism case http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2012/08/jonah_lehrer_plagiarism_in_wired_com_an_investigation_into_plagiarism_quotes_and_factual_inaccuracies_.single.html

4. Harvard plagiarism case and collaborative authorship: http://www.thecrimson.com/article/2012/8/30/academic-dishonesty-ad-board/

5. Bots and copyright enforcement: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/09/copyrights-robot-wars-heat-algorithms-block-live-streams-first-and-ask-questions

6. Philip Roth and Wikipedia: http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2012/09/an-open-letter-to-wikipedia.html

7. Europeana and public domain metadata: https://creativecommons.org/weblog/entry/34017

8. Association of American Publishers and Google settlement agreement: http://googlepress.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/publishers-and-google-reach-agreement.html

9. Pearson DMCA complaint results in pulling of 1.45 million edublogs: http://wpmu.org/serverbeach-takes-1-45-million-edublogs-offline-just-12-hours-after-sending-through-a-lame-dmca-notice/

10. HathiTrust case: http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/10/court-hands-huge-victory-to-universities-digitization-efforts/263509/#.UHh0gfL69D4.facebook https://chronicle.com/blogs/ticker/judge-hands-hathitrust-a-win-in-fair-use-case/50462

11. Friday Night Lights creator accuses Mitt Romney of plagiarism: http://www.buzzfeed.com/stacylambe/friday-night-lights-director-accuses-mitt-romney

12. Review of the Republican Study Committee report "Three Myths about Copyright Law": https://www.eff.org/document/rsc-report-three-myths-about-copyright-law <-- this should be easy; it's only a nine-page report.

Hi Clancy,

I'd like to write about the HathiTrust developments if no one had claimed it.

Best,
Traci

Hi Clancy,

What's the timeline for completion of these reports? If the deadline is not too soon, and if you have no other takers, I'd be interested in working on MOOCs and IP.

Best, Jim

Clancy,

I’m interested in the bots and copyright enforcement topic, since I’m particularly interested in the ways in which social media try to police the use of copyrighted material by fan communities.

One more topic:

Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons (and first sale doctrine). This one should be of particular interest to us because it concerns textbooks.

HathiTrust is yours, Traci!

Jim, the Annual goes up on NCTE's site typically about a week before CCCC. The deadline to get the manuscripts to me would be around March 1. No one else has claimed MOOCs yet.

Bots will go to Traci!

I could also see the three stories about plagiarism (3, 4, and 11 on my list) going into one article for the Annual: "high-profile plagiarism in 2012" or the like. There's also the Carleen Basler case (http://amherststudent.amherst.edu/?q=article/2012/09/25/basler-resigns-after-admitting-plagiarism ).

Do you mean Laurie? Traci requested the HathiTrust topic.

Clancy,

March 1st is do-able for me. I'd be happy to work on MOOCs and IP if no one else wants to.
