Hi everyone,

We weren't named as a group who's getting automatic Standing Group status, as the Black Caucus, the Latino/a Caucus, the American Indian Caucus, and the Asian/Asian American Caucus were. Do we, in fact, have it? If not, do we want to try to go through the review process to get this status?

It seems like we already have the privileges and responsibilities that the Standing Groups have. Just wanted to bring it up in case we should discuss it at the Caucus meeting.

CCCC Member Groups Information and Guidelines

Dear Clancy Ratliff,

The CCCC recognizes the special relationship that Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and other member groups establish over time with the organization. In an effort to secure those relationships more strongly, the CCCC Executive Committee voted unanimously at its annual November meeting at the NCTE Convention in Las Vegas to approve a new process allowing such groups to apply for status as Standing Groups. This plan followed the recommendations of the CCCC Task Force to Review Special Interest Group Guidelines, whose members we thank for their hard work: Eric Bateman, Nicole Gonzales-Howell, Seth Kahn, Steve Parks (Chair), Malea Powell, and William Thelin.

Standing Groups will be allotted one designated panel in addition to a business meeting at the Annual Convention, subject to the Program Chair’s approval. Standing Group business meetings will be held during the regular slots that the Program Chair designates for those meetings. Existing SIGs that have met for at least five consecutive years may apply immediately for Standing Group status if they wish. Other groups that hold meetings, sponsor panels or workshops at the Annual Convention, publish newsletters, and carry on other activities in the organization may apply for Standing Group status by way of establishing a SIG and documenting their activities. Note that current SIGs don’t have to apply for Standing Group status if they don’t want to formalize their relationship with CCCC in this way; they’ll retain their designation as SIGs.

(The Black Caucus, the Latino/a Caucus, the American Indian Caucus, and the Asian/Asian American Caucus are automatically considered Standing Groups, will retain their designation as Caucuses, and are exempt from the reporting and review requirements of the Standing Groups.)

The full guidelines and requirements for Standing Group status are available at http://www.ncte.org/cccc/sigs.

We invite current SIGs that can document at least five years of sustained activity to apply, if they wish, for status as a Standing Group. A group can apply for Standing Group status at any time but please note that status changes will not go into effect until after the 2013 Convention in Las Vegas. We also invite other member groups to begin establishing SIG status if they wish eventually to be recognized as Standing Groups. Please follow the application procedures in the guidelines and send your application to: cc...@ncte.org.

We’re excited about the new opportunities that these changes will provide to CCCC members.

Chris Anson
Chair, CCCC

Hi Clancy,

I think the first step is to check in with Chris to determine whether
we were overlooked. We have an over-20-year history as a standing
caucus already, and we've been through this kind of review process
several times (as when the CCCC started calling us a workshop and then
switched us back). Logie can fill you in on that last round. I
wouldn't assume that we'll simply get to keep our
privileges/responsibilities. We can argue that we've been active &
productive, especially in regard to significant IP legislation.

Best, Karen

OK, I emailed Chris. He's checking with the Executive Committee to find out about our status. I guess he didn't want to say anything without consulting them first.
