We're having a couple of problems with LanSchool v5.02 on a
NetWare 3.12 server. We have two classrooms, the first has Compaq
DeskPro 4000 P120 PCs, the other has NEC ES PRO MMX166 PCs. As
someone else suggested, we had to setup the Compaqs with Standard
Super VGA video drivers, 16 Colors in order to be able to broadcast.
We would like to be able to use 256 colors if possible. We downloaded
the latest video driver from Compaq's site but it didn't help.

And as for the NECs, we are unable to broadcast because the student
workstations immediately give a "LanSchool Fatal Error - Network Adapter
card is malfunctioning. LanSchool cannot continue on this machine."
We tried using the most recent NIC drivers from 3Com's site but it
didn't help. Is there a known problem with this type of card, or is
there something else we're missing? (The Compaq PCs have integrated
Compaq NICs and are not having this problem.) Any suggestions?

time is the charm, right?

Dear Allison,

This is the recommendation I got, please confirm if it helps. This is
from the developer of LANSchool.

2 things:
The second problem (the error message of the fatal network adapter)
should be fixed with the v5.02 patch.
The first problem does indeed deal with a problem in Compaq's video
drivers for the Deskpro 2000 and 4000 pentuim based computers. I have
one customer who found a Compaq driver which did work; however, I've
not been able to find the name of the good driver. As I look at
Compaq's support page, I see 3 drivers which may function in high
resolution modes with LANSchool. They are : SP3260, SP3484, or SP3978

I just posted a message about Compaq's and LANSchool. This may be of some help with getting the Deskpro's and high-resolution graphics to function properly. Since I'm not positive what sort of video hardware is in your Deskpro, I can't be certain, but if it is an S3 Trio64 chip, the recent posting will solve this problem.

The second problem could be because of Client-32. You did not mention if you are using Client-32. If so, let me repeat another posting I did today...

Where did you get the Novell Client32 drivers from? The ones Novell ships with
Netware are known to be bad. I have tested with the shipping Client32 drivers
and have seen problems. I have replaced these shipping drivers with the ones on
Novell's WEB site and have fixed problems. The URL of Novell's latest client32
drivers is:http://www.novell.com/download/The file name is
IntranetWare ClientTM 2.2 for Windows 95It is dated1997/08/28
Please note that Novell shipped an earlier version of v2.2 which was broken.
Don't just go by the version number, but also check the file date. Also,
Client32 can use a variety of NIC drivers. It can use:16 bit ODI32 bit ODI
16 bit NDIS32 bit NDIS
I've found problems with the 16 Bit ODI drivers and any app which tries to send
packets (like LANSchool). I test with both 32 bit ODI and 32 bit NDIS drivers
and would strongly recommend using either of these. You mentioned that you
"upgraded" to client32. If you were upgrading from Novell's VLM drivers, the
upgrade utility will oftain automaticlly select 16-bit ODI drivers. That would
explain the troubles you are seeing.

Let me know if this helps.
