Baobab tree in Tanzania

Baobab tree in Tanzania
Adansonia digitata, the baobab, is the most widespread of the Adansonia species on the African continent, found in the hot, dry regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Other members of the genus are found in Australia and Madagascar. Some large individuals live to well over a thousand years of age. The tree bears large, heavy white flowers. The fruits are filled with pulp that dries, hardens, and falls to pieces which look like chunks of powdery, dry bread.

The specific epithet digitata refers to the fingers of a hand, which the five leaflets (typically) in each cluster bring to mind.

Adansonia digitata is known by many names, the most common of which is baobab. It is also known as the 'dead-rat tree' (from the appearance of the fruits), 'monkey-bread tree' (the soft, dry fruit is edible), 'upside-down tree' (the sparse branches resemble roots) and cream of tartar tree.

Some Locations of the Baobab....
1. North Wall, Jain Temple, next to Bus Depot , Vashi, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. A cobbler uses the ample base of the trunk of this tree to display his wares!
2. Takka Village, Panvel, Raigad District, Maharashtra. The huge hollow formed at the base has been tiled and semicircular brick seating constructed within... to accomodate 4 to 6 persons inside!
regards,
jacob.

Right in front of Pune University main building there is a beautiful tree.

The tree on Tilak & Bajirao road junction has slightly different characteristics as compared to University tree.

In Auragabad there is one in police quarters. On roar from aurangpura to engineering college near Samarth nagar

In Battish shirala near Karad (famous for snakes). there five good samples.

Many road side vaidus sell fruits as medicine. They call this as GORAKH IMLI. It is also known as bottle tree.

l have seen one and photographed (analogue camera) a baobab tree in the golkonda fort area in hyderabad and also seen one in badwar park railway colony in mumbai - though this was not quite like the golkonda fort one.  about the latter, story goes that an abyssian had got it from africa and planted it. lt is protected well with a iron fence though it spoils its beauty. lt is a beautiful and a huge tree.

There were two (a male and a female) at a place called Mangaliawas near Ajmer. The place has religious significance and lots of people come there to worship. The male tree has died some 5 years back and the female tree is still existing. They are called kalp Vriksh here.
Just sharing some pictures from there.
Apologies for the file size

One small clarification. Baobabs are monoecious, the flowers are unisexual. Solitary trees will set fruit.

A Webshots album of our local specimens here:

Dear Gaurav
The two trees near Mangaliawas are regarded as male and female
by the locals as the male has a branch resembling a phallic shape and the other
female parts  for religious connotations. The male / female  trees located very close are worshipped both by Hindus and Muslims as wish full filling trees.
Both trees have large trunks and colourful threads are tied around the trunks.
I do not think the 'male' tree is dead as Baobab trees can remain leafless for more than six months.
As Barry indicates there are no male and female trees in Botanical terms.
But it is  worth checking if the tree is actually dead!!!!
I had seen them some years ago.
Cheers.
