Request to identify this huge tree.

Some of the young localites refer to this tree as - Tapsud mara (tree) and again  there is this old man, a temple watchman,   names it - marali tree(Kannada).

I'm almost certain that is a Terminalia species of some sort. I thought it was Terminalia superba (Limba) from Africa, but the seed shape is incorrect, although the bark is a match.

I think it's Holoptelea integrifolia (Syn. Ulmus integrifolia) with unmistakable seeds. We used to eat the meengi inside the seeds (with taste like that of Watermelon seeds) in our childhood. Here is some data & links from Indiantreepix Database:
Holoptelea integrifolia (Syn. Ulmus integrifolia)  Urticaceae Kanju, Papdi, Karanji, Indian-elm     Flowering- January to February as per link Seeds Kanju/ Papdi (Holoptelea integrifolia) & Caterpillars (Which one?)on its trunk - indiantreepix | Google Groups

An interesting-looking tree I've never seen in the United States.

Is it tropical in origin? An Indian native? What sort of soil/climate requirements does it have?

I think it's an Indian native tree. See the links below for its range & soil/ habitat:

Hi Raghu ji,

Thanks Raghuji for the nice pictures and also for eliciting nice stream of discussion.
My information from Pune.
This tree Holoptela integrifolia is called as Waval or Wawal in Marathi.
I think it is or rather it was one of the commonest trees around Pune and most probably has to be native and endemic.
There are still many huge trees in Pune city. One of the big tree is on Parvati at the turn of the stair way around 15-20 steps before the main gate at the top.
One big tree  is atanding tall just opposite Dnyan Prabodhini school in Paranjpe maternity home.
As Nabha has mentioned we used to eat the seeds calling them as Pistas in our childhood.
The flowers are very small and inconspicuous but large inflorescences are visible in Dec jan and the winged seeds are very conspicuous and in big bunches.
