Satish ji,
beautiful pics.

Here is some interesting info about the seeds of Adenanthera pavonina from the book 'Trees of Mumbai' by Mr. Almeida and Mr. Chaturvedi.
"In old days, the seeds were used as weights by jewellers in Arebia (Aden) . Each seed roughly weighs 0.26 gm. The seeds are toxic to humans/animals. But, if the seed is eaten unbroken, it does not get digested and and is expelled without causing any harm to the consumer.
The seeds are twice as heavy as 'Gunj' or 'crab's eye' ( Arbus precatorius) seeds."

Gunj or Crab's eye ( Arbus precatorius) is a  twiner from the family Fabaceae.
i have uploaded pics of Gunj' ( Arbus precatorius) seeds. These seeds also when the external coat is removed are toxic  and if swallowed can be fatal.

Garg ji,
i am aware i should not mix two diff. plants in the same email. But i wanted to highlight the similarity in seeds of both plants. so i changed the subject of the mail. is it correct or should i write a separate mail ?

cheers,
shubhada

Thanks Shubhada ji
Very good information. The Marathi name of both the species is same ....Gunj.(The tree variety is often called as Ratangunj) I don't think any body should object such discussions.

Satish ji,
Another Marathi name for Adenanthera pavonina is Thorali Gunj - ' थोरली गुंज' . ( may be because it is a tree and Arbus precatorius is a twiner.)
cheers,
shubhada

Satish ji
I believe it's the same rati seeds which were used for weighing gold
when grams were not introduced.Rati used to be the smallest unit-seer-
shatank-tola-masa and rati, 8 rati = 1masa and 12masa=1 tola,
5tola=1shatank,and 16 shatank 1 seer

Sarbjeet has nicely explained the exact weight of rati.
In Gujarati , the word "rati " has been used commonly.
eg "ratibhar  vishvas nathi" - not even the least faith. Rati-seed and bhar-weight =ratibhar

Bindu

Seeds of Abrus precatorius contains a toxin called ABRIN which is
poisonous and its inhalation or ingestion can cause death too. Hence
unnecessary contact with the seeds should be avoided. The main problem
is, there is no antidote for this toxin !! Seeds do swell if you put
them in water for 3-4 days, so I imagine if they are really harmless
with the outer coat if ingested!!

Pankaj

... these brilliant red seeds (of Adenanthera pavonina) are lens shaped, about ⅓ inch in diameter and intriguingly of uniform weight
-- (4 seeds c. 1 gramme OR 1 seed c. 4 grains OR about 109 seeds c. 1 ounce)
-- were once used as a standard measure of weighing gold, just as Abrus (precatorius) seeds.

Adenanthera seeds are twice as heavy as those of Abrus.

Although the raw seeds (of Adenanthera pavonina) are toxic, when cooked they are edible.
The seeds are roasted, shelled and then eaten with rice in Java, Indonesia.

Regards.

Most probabely the leaves of rati has medicinal value. They are eaten for stomach
digestion even mixed in "mukhwas"
But when you all say the poisonous effect------ i am wondering if it's the same.
It's called sonamukhi pan.

Bindu

See even snakes venom is medicinal, so all toxic plants have some
medicinal value, some of which we know whereas some are yet to be
discovered....

----------------
The toxin present in Abrus precatorius is a close relative to ricin
called abrin. It is a dimer consisting of two protein subunits, termed
A and B. The B chain facilitates abrin's entry into a cell by bonding
to certain transport proteins on cell membranes, which then transport
the toxin into the cell. Once inside the cell, the A chain prevents
protein synthesis by inactivating the 26S subunit of the ribosome. One
molecule of abrin will inactivate up to 1,500 ribosomes per second.
Symptoms are identical to those of ricin, except abrin is more toxic
by several orders of magnitude; the fatal dose of ricin is
approximately 75 times greater than the fatal dose of abrin. Abrin can
kill with a circulating amount of less than 3 μg (micrograms).

----------------------------

In Chotanagpur plateau, these seeds are used as abortifacient by some
tribals.

All parts of Abrus are used as medicine in Traditional Healing. The
Traditional Healers are aware of methods to remove toxins from Abrus.

Thanks Shubhada. So i was right after all.
Again the gunja seeds as we call Rati are also used as garland for "Thakorji" in Vaishnavas.
Gunjamala is a must in  " Pushtimarg" There is another variety also where the seeds are creamish
white. Both the types are used for malas in the "Shringar".
I had mentioned this before also when the topic of these seeds had opened up.
Regards,
Bindu
