Tree for ID-290909-RK

I have been trying for a long time to get the ID of this tree-the
Lalbagh experts were stumped too when i showed them the
pictures.Because of a sudden downpour i could not take them to the
tree itself.Trees of Delhi has a pic of Salvadora persica with the
same sort of trunk-the leaves do not match tho'.I have been assured
Lalbagh does not have S.persica.Hope indiatreepix can help out! Have
not been able to take pics of flowers or fruits because i have not
seen any, the numerous times i've seen the tree.Pic taken in Lalbagh
Botanical Garden,Bangalore on-24-09-09.

Rubber Tree (Ficus elastica) leaves are more pointed at the tip. From
the rounded tips, shining leaves, and the prominent mid-rib, to me it
looks like Sultan Champa (Calophyllum inophyllum)

Hello Tabish ji Thank you for the links.Beautiful flowers-tho' i've
yet to see this tree in bloom! Isn't the peculiar trunk a giveaway?I
should have thought it would be so easy to identify! I am quite an
amateur in id-ing i'd like to add.

Dear Friends
I am a scientist in Systematic Botany Division of Forest Research
Institute, Dehradun. I write this mail to you beacuse of your interest in
plants. I have been organizing short term training courses in Development
of Green Belts and Identification of plants and management of herbarium
for the last several years. One such course on Capacity Building in Plant
Taxonomy was organized last year and was funded by the Ministry of
Env. & Forest, Govt. of India and experts of various groups were invited to
deliver lectures on different topics/groups. Some of you might have seen
its report in Taxon, Current Science and Phytotaxonomy.
One of these course regarding identification and management of
herbarium is being organized between Nov. 9 - 13, 2009. Apart from
classroom lectures we organize a field visit to nearby area for on the spot
identification and also have workshops for identification with the help of
flora. The course is one one week duration and the course fee which
includes boarding and lodging and course material is Rs. 8000/- for Indian
nationals, Rs. 15000/- for participants of SAARC countries and Rs.
30000/- for other foreign nationals. It is requested to kindly send the
nominations by 15th of Oct. 09.
