On 15/8/08 at Vanasthalipuram Deer Park in Hyderabad, AP. There were many such smallish trees with small leaves compared to B. purpuria (Kaniar) & B. variegata (Kachnar)  over there. I hope the Id is correct.
Here are few links with some details: http://www.ildis.org/LegumeWeb/6.00/taxa/486.shtml

Hello Gargji     Are the flowers of this Bauhinia variety white in
colour?  In Goa too leaves of SonTaaka [i hope i'm not wrong with the
name] are exchanged on Vijayadashami day-I think at the end of a
'Yatra'-signifying good wishes for each other. What a pleasant
tradition!
      Regards
