Hi Sindhu,

You can take Public Adm as one of the optionals as it is very popular optionals and you will get lot of study materials easily. For other optional I suggest Sociology/Geopgraphy.

But finaly it depends on your interest as it is a really long trip and you need to take subjects which really interest you..

You can start preparing by going through NCERT texts of 10th to 12th std for GS and keeping yourself updated about the curreent affairs.

Geography is not a compulsory subject but forms major chunk of General studies paper.

All the best

For prelims .. but not sure if it will be effective from 2009.

UPSC recommended an aptitude test for prelims instead of optional papers to make exam more uniform and relevant

But It will take some time I guess.. may come into effect from 2010 or 11

Hi rajni ,

For IT students closest subject I can think is maths, but syllabus is too theoretical
and includes things like 3D geometry, advanced calculus, Set and Group theory which we never studied in engineering or forgot by the time we got out of college :-)

In my opinion any subject is fine as long as you are interested in it and study materials/coaching are easily available
Sociology and Publci Adminstration are usually favourite subjects

Regards,
Jagadeesh
