to IndependentsHall
Since posting our call for membership yesterday, I've felt the need to clarify a number of things. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible.
  1. Independents Hall is NOT just for programmers, designers, or web people. Anyone who wants a quality creative environment and to be surrounded by smart, interesting people will benefit from spending time in our space. If you can work from a desk, table, or couch, you can work at IndyHall.
  2. Independents Hall is NOT just for independents/freelancers.  I know, the name is misleading, but if you have a boss that will let you, you could spend a day working remotely with us. If you work for a company but work from home, this might be a great opportunity to break cabin fever and stop talking to the cat.
Also, there's a chance for you to go back to your office and tell them how productive you were while working with us...and maybe we can organize a training seminar to get your employer to spend a little time on enhancing the community at your workplace. The opportunities are as endless as your willingness to think outside the box.
  3. Independents Hall IS just as social as it is productive (and vice versa). A huge portion of our mission (which I'd like to spend more time honing so we can solidify it) is to encourage collaboration outside of the office. Some of my best ideas have come over beers (ok, most of them). More social engagements, like Stan mentioned, for everyone to get face time and exposure to one another is very positive.
  4. Independents Hall IS a work in progress. If something doesn't make sense, doesn't fit you, or is just totally out of whack, you're allowed to say something. In fact, it's encouraged. I've been known to make some gross assumptions based on my own personal views, but this group isn't "All About Alex Hillman", in fact, quite the contrary. It's for all of you, so talk to me, and to each other [but not behind my back, that's rude :-)]
  5. Independents Hall IS based out of this space, but the space is ONLY ONE facet of our project. By becoming a $25/month member, you enable us to take this so much further. Don't forget, this organization is a vehicle for exposure, exploration, education, and collaboration. We'll continue to organize Cream Cheese Sessions all over the city. Geoff and I will continue with Likeminds.us meetups every month. Junto and (soon, hopefully) BarCampPhiladelphia. $25/month helps us take care of some of the overhead to keep these fun, engaging events happening, and growing. You can attend these events without a membership, but if you're enjoying them enough to attend, isn't it worth a couple of bucks to make sure they keep happening, plus you get a free day in the IndyHall coworking space and all of the other benefits (and benefits to come) of being on the roster?
Think about what you might spend on advertising and project recruitment, and how valuable it will be to be "in the know" with one of the most active pools of talent in the city. We're talking about an "Organization Membership", or a good way for an organization to support IndyHall. If you run an organization that you'd like to affiliate, let me know, I'll be sure you're included in that conversation.

And a huge thank you to the number of supporters who have already spoken up, and made commitments. Join the ranks, be a part of Independents Hall.

Enough of my rambling, have a great night.

Cheers,
Alex
