auto-citation so other can use the record as a reference in studies
afterwords.

if possible, just came in my mind.

Hm, what kind of citation did you have in mind? I'm not even sure how
I would cite an iNaturalist observation. I guess I would treat it as
a web page. Also, have you tried Zotero (http://www.zotero.org)?
It's a great way to manage references and citations. It's especially
good for autogenerating citations for web resources.

That'll probably be easy enough. Once we start storing full names,
I'll try adding this.

Just as another voice, I would recommend against this (auto-citation
feature). There are many databases that aggregate a lot of data about
organisms, cater to specialists, or have data checks that ensure
better data quality. Scientifically important records should be
submitted to those kinds of databases.

In my view, I-Naturalist should be maintained more as a simple,
artful, visually appealing tool for sharing natural history
enthusiam. Except in rare cases where the photo really tells the
story, I'd be loathe to "cite" any record from I-Naturalist (and even
photos can be fraudulent or misleading). If I ever DID want to cite a
record, I would simply apply standard (APA) format and write the cite
myself. No buttons for anybody else to stumble over, no complexifying
"functionality" to the Observations form. My two cents.

Jon,

I see tremendous scientific potential in sites like iNaturalist, but I can see why you hesitate to cite individual observations from iNat. iNat makes no distinction between observations from a TNC scientist and a 1st grade student. However, through community controls and the power of numbers, we can contribute to real-time ecosystem monitoring (OK, so I read your bio).

I am very interested in exploring your concerns in this arena as I formulate reliability metrics for datapoints and users. As a scientist, which geodatabases are you more comfortable citing for individual and aggregate points and why?

Thanks,
Sean
