Hi,

We are seeing that setting locale to some supported languages does not work and IMA UI is still shown in English.

To reproduce the issue:
1. Go to your own demo page for this: https://codepen.io/imasdk/pen/GoBZaN
2. Set locale to is, kn, lo, ml, zu, ta, te, sv, eu, ...
3. Check the ad UI language.

Can you please let us know what is going wrong here? One of our customers need to localize their UI to is but currently this doesn't work.

Are some languages no longer supported?

Kind regards,
Ceyhun

Hi Ceyhun,

Thank you for contacting the IMA SDK support team.

By reviewing your concern, I understand that Setting IMA locale doesn't work for “Icelandic”, or ”is” language.

I have checked the demo page and I can confirm that the google.ima.settings.setLocale('is'); is still showing in English language only. I will check with our team regarding this issue and one of my team members will reach out to you once we have an update on this. Meanwhile, your patience is highly appreciated.

Hi,

To add a bit more information to this, Icelandic is not the only affected language. As I mentioned at least knlomlzutatesveu, be, am, bn, gl, fa, gu, ms, mr ... do not work either. Our customer is currently blocked with Icelandic but these languages also don't work so it might be worth giving them a look if it doesn't have the same root cause.

Additionally, at least Icelandic works on Apple TV, but not on Android and Web, so the IMA SDK for iOS doesn't seem to be affected.

Hopefully it will be useful to reach to a solution. Please keep us updated on the progress.

Kind regards,
Ceyhun

Hello Ceyhun,

This is Jackson from the IMA SDK team. Thank you for raising this issue. There was actually an inaccuracy with the IMA localization docs to include a number of languages that we do not support translations for. The doc should now be up to date.

IMA does not support translations for is, kn, lo, ml, zu, ta, te, eu, be, am, bn, gl, fa, gu, ms, mr. To be noted, we do support sv for Swedish.

Would you like me to raise a feature request to add is for Icelandic?

Thank you,
Jackson

Hi Jackson,

There was actually an inaccuracy with the IMA localization docs to include a number of languages that we do not support translations for. The doc should now be up to date.

Thank you for checking this. However, I am still confused as this change makes the docs further inaccurate. Currently Icelandic is not mentioned as a supported language in the IMA SDK for iOS docs: https://developers.google.com/interactive-media-ads/docs/sdks/ios/client-side/localization

However, as mentioned it clearly works on IMA for iOS SDK and is supported (ignore the styling in the screenshot):

Yes, please. Icelandic should be supported consistently across Web, Android and iOS SDKs for IMA.

Is it possible to share a timeline on when this would be implemented?

Kind regards,
Ceyhun

Hello Ceyhun,

Thank you for identifying that additional languages are supported on iOS, I think I have identified where in the codebase iOS and tvOS locale information is and will work on updating the docs to reflect that.

I will also raise a feature request to support Icelandic on the other platforms.

Hi Jackson,

Thank you for following this up.

Would it be possible to share some kind of a timeframe when the Icelandic locale would be available on all IMA SDKs? It is already there on iOS/tvOS so I guess it wouldn't take long to start using the same strings on other SDKs?

Kind regards,
Ceyhun

Hello Ceyhun,

I am working with the translation team, and I think it will be available on HTML5 and Android some time next week.

I will let you on know this thread when I have more information.

Hi Jackson,

Do you have any updates to share on this, as it has been 2 weeks with no updates?

In the meantime our customer let us know the Icelandic strings suddenly stopped working on tvOS too. Hopefully because you are making some changes on your side!

Kind regards,
Ceyhun

Hello Ceyhun,

Thank you for the update. I was able to confirm that setting "is" does not seem to be working currently for the iOS or tvOS IMA SDKs. As far as I know, this should not be related to the changes adding support for "is" in other IMA SDKs. Let me raise this to the IMA team to investigate.

As for the changes for "is" support on the HTLM5 and Android platforms. They have been updated internally, and should take affect in the next release of the IMA HTML5 SDK.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hello Ceyhun,

I wanted to update you that Icelandic should now be available for HTML5 and Android. We are still looking into the recent issue with iOS and tvOS.

Hello, I'm experiencing a similar problem with the 'fa' (Farsi) locale in Android SDK, as discussed above. Despite my efforts, the content is still shown in English. Also the Android doc for supported languages seems not updated and doesn't include `fa` or some other languages. However, I was getting Farsi content till the last few months.

Hello Morteza,

Thank you for reaching out. As far as I can tell, 'fa' (Farsi) is not one of the supported locales for the IMA Android or HTML5 SDKs. There was an issue were it may have been included in the IMA localization guide, but this was incorrect.

If you would like to make a request to add support for 'fa', could you please create a new thread to track that request?

For the 'is' (Icelandic) issue on iOS/tvOS, I currently do not have any new information.
