I tried to install the enable malayalam given in the
http://malayalam.kerala.gov.in in ubuntu 9.10. But it caused unmet
dependencies.
when I tried to fix the broken dependencies, by the command *apt-get
install -f*, it showed the removal of *ubuntu-desktop*, which will
cause many problems. I cant install any other application due to this.
What is the remedy?

This is really a bad way to reply to issues reported in a mailing
list. Please don't reply if you don't have a solution for the specific
issue.

stranger:
I think the documentation is based on an older version of Ubuntu which
required the pango/icu patches. But since those patches are already in
upstream, you may not need to install the additional packages to
enable Malayalam. AFAIK, Malayalam works perfectly in ubuntu-9.10
except translations.

This is really annoying. I am fed up with this. Should I reinstall the
whole ubuntu itself to solve the problem?

I'm not sure how to solve the dependency problem since I'm not an
expert in Ubuntu/Debian. Do you have ibus/scim/xkb ?

Jeevz,

You need to follow some netiquette. You need ibus or scim or xkb to set up language support. So what Manilal had asked is part of the problem solving. If you don't have a solution, better keep quite. The answer for how could you cross the ferry is not 'buy a ship'. Mind it.

Please be aware that this is a public mailing list and it's been
archived. We are not replying/responding to the issues posted just
because it will solve one person's problems, but to serve as a
reference to all the users who wish to use FOSS. So posting something
disgusting and then providing some weird clarfications doesn't sounds
good. Please review my first reply to this thread.

IMO, solving a problem and suggesting a solution are entirely
different and you should be aware of the context.

Nothing personal I said early..:)...and
@Manilal,,

I completely got what   you said, but please review  my first reply too..

If someone  complaining about Windows OS issues , I would suggest him to try a Gnu/Linux rather than trying to debug his windows machine..so that would be a suggestion and "might be" a solution too,..Depends upon that person..Just like that , some body complaining about the issues of Ubuntu, there are two things,
1.try to debug and fix it...
2..use any other...

The very context of FOSS is about " we have alternatives""...

So its perfectly clear that, we have many ways to cross ferry  than buying the  Titanic.

I believe suggesting a  solution can be the cause to solving a problem..

@Jeevz

I personally think Mandriva is the best. But that was not the question asked
and "Use mandriva !" is not a solution. If you dont know the answer or where
to look for it , it is better that you not reply to the thread at all. Humor
is tolerated, but the kind of discussion I saw in the thread is not at all
healthy. Try to be serious and thoughtful.

@All

Any further discussion that is not on the particular query i.e) off topic is
not welcome. Once again, do read http://kandalaya.org/guidelines.html.

@stranger in black.....

What exactly are you looking for?

Do you want to see your ubuntu in malayalam?
Or just want to type in malayalam?

If the choice is second one, iBus is default installed in Karmic. System>Prefrences>IBus Prefrences

then from 'Input Method' tab, select & add Malayalam (I prefer 'Mozhi').
If you need identifying the equivalent characters

I'm not entirely sure that this is what you are looking for...

As Adhin mentioned, I would also suggest using ibus. I have been using
it in Fedora 11 and it works well. However, if you still want to stick
on with scim, then probably you need to install "scim-m17n" and
"m17n-contrib" from the ubuntu repository..

If you want to start scim automatically when you login, then run the
following commands:
# sudo -i
# touch /etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# chmod 646 /etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# echo 'export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"' >>
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# echo 'export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"' >>
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# echo 'export XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"' >>
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# echo 'export QT_IM_MODULE="scim"' >> /etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup
# chmod 644 /etc/X11/Xsession.d/74custom-scim_startup

Hope this helps.

Does this support phonetic keyboard?

I think no updates are coming in this site
http://malayalam.kerala.gov.in. They are still with ubuntu 8.04

The answer to the removal of the ubuntu-desktop package can be solved
by reinstalling it. I thought it will be very large package. From
another mailing list I got the information that it is just a meta
package, checked the package list and found it is just having 29kB in
size. So no need to worry about the band width

The site is maintained and updated by SPACE and IT Mission. There is a
section "അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളും നിര്‍ദ്ദേശങ്ങളും" on their website. May be
nice if you could sent a comment.
