This is exactly what i was talking about in the previous thread.
As said in the article, The approach is old! With the advent of Free
Software, Its obvious that Proprietary way of dealing softwares is a
fake system built on the greed of software developers.

ISRO sources revealed that Chairman G Madhavan Nair was given a
presentation by the IGIS team on his recent visit to SAC this week,
adding that the commercial launch will take place any time in
December.

The only reason they make these softwares non-free and commercialising
it the non-free way is because they think thats the "world-standard" way
of dealing with the software- While obviously its not!.

Its not that ISRO (or in general other gov or gov related institutions)is
trying to keep things secret. Its about all the gov and gov related
institutions being aware of the new ecosystem that Free
Software and related philosophies offers.

This fact they should be knowing, be it ISRO or be it CDAC or other
governmental institutions who continue to release their software
non-free!

And I think the unjust license fee they gain for the software should not
be the way ISRO gains profit for the country!

ok, let them hear some music!

Hoarders may get piles of money,
That is true, hackers, that is true.
But they cannot help their neighbors;
That's not good, hackers, that's not good.

:)

Does an Open Letter to ISRO to make this a Swathanthra software look
like a good idea?
We could also try to get the data released in public domain. It is
already paid for by the tax payers. Many countries already does
provide geographic data in the public domain like Tiger data in the US
and in The Netherlands. It would be a great step in making the fruits
reach common man.

+1 Praveen bhai. Somebody please take charge of the open letter.

Still, there is some problem. It wont be easy for them to release a
closed source system as open source, no matter how much they like the
idea. Remember that cases of closed source apps opening up are rare,
though you may have quite a few examples to show me. The truth is, you
don't need the full app, just the data format. With FOSS applications
like KDE Marble and GRASS GIS already available, FOSS community may
need to just modify them to receive this data once the format is
available. Somebody should think on these lines too.

I'm also in support for writing an open letter, whether or not it makes an immediate effect.
Anyway, lemme bring focus to another free/open application: Kst
Kst is a fast (they claim to be the fastest!) real-time data plotting application. It's part of the KDE suite, and the development is funded by the Canadian Space Agency. I'm in the process of introducing it in our office (where we currently use EasyPlot which runs on Windows).

Yes. Its a good idea. And its a need to make the data to be under public domain. This is a requirement.
