This is my first post here. Hello everyone!
Is there a favourite open-source CRM that you'd recommend to friends?
I keep getting asked about it but I'm totally unaware of this field.
My brief search doesn't yield any good "free as in beer" ones --
they're mostly commercial open source software with free trials which
won't do.

Sugarcrm, if you can bump up the RAM in the server. Give a shot to Vtiger too.

Crm's come in all flavors for helpdesk, operations, sales, analytics,
etc... there's sugarcrm, rt is a helpdesk crm, opentaps, so it
depends on _your_ friends requirements and you might also want to
check the platforms, license, etc...

could be a good idea to find out what a CRM is before recommending one

I'll try to get specific requirements, though I believe its operations
what they're looking for.
They're probably looking for a desktop based solution. Since CiviCRM
looks interesting, I'll see if I can get them to set up apache.
SugarCRM doesn't seem to have a free as in beer version. So that's ruled out.

Depending on what needs the CRM is supposed to meet (Sales Automation,
HelpDesk, Marketing Automation to name a few), there would be
favorites. A quicker way would be to get your friends to jot down what
they use it for, what kind of support etc they are looking/expecting
and thereon look at the free (either as in mukt or, as in muft) ones.

... could you define which license you are looking at and why? Sugar
does have a community edition in php so I dont understand the
free..beer part. That said, it will not work out-of-the-box or satisfy
your client requirements entirely ...and dont get me started on the
functionality part.
well Michael Tiemann once blogged about sugarCRM being 'bogus open source'. I
do not know if the situation has changed now.
