Trucks in Lower Main

Friday night around 9pm a massive grain truck was making its way down
Lower Main by Obs Cafe leaving no space for traffic in opposite
direction. The driver was about to drive our little car into the
ground, I got out and motioned for him to stop and the vehicles behind
me to all reverse back and into Station Rd intersection to get out of
the trucks way.

The driver of the truck appeared to be brain dead when I explained
that his truck should not be there on a friday night.

Can trucks be banned from Lower Main as the road is simply not wide
enough.

As most of us know, this happens regularly.

 

It would be great if someone managed to take a photo of one of these big, aggressive, forced back up situations!

Way back their was talk of having Lwr Main turned into a one way, and making
Lwr Main from Station to Trill a walk way only. Maybe we should try our
luck

I noticed yesterday evening two incredible large trucks and trailers in Lower Main Road. I think yours was reasonable old and/or dirty. I can echo Trevor's sentiments as my thought was "what the Hell he were they doing there".

From 21:00 hours there was a massive police exercise, roadblocks, Traffic Officers,  SW43 and 14, under cover officers, extra officers from Woodstock, Insp. Piedt, Liquor board officers, etc etc concentrating mainly on Lwr Main Rd and one would think that they would have stopped the truck?

I suppose unless there is a length, width and weight restriction on both ends of Obs there is little one could do.

A month ago a huge remover van reversed into and broke a tree of my neighbour corner Station and Oxford. This driver was also brain death and refused to stop when warned by me and or acknowledge any wrong. Many pavements, especially on corners are damaged by trucks unable to round corners.

Traffic Department should answer our question.

Our road signs are also damaged by these huge  trucks, Station Rd has now become Lytton St and Lytton has become Station, these signs were twisted by a truck.

Trucks, or vehicles beyond a certain width, should not be permitted to
drive in Lower Main Rd. There's barely enough space for cars, much less
trucks.

I would love to see more people-friendly (car-free) areas in Obs. The
area along Lower Main from Trill to Station seems the most viable. If
the whole of Lower Main was made one-way, that would shift traffic into
Nuttall and/or Arnold, both of which are residential, so this doesn't
seem too viable. However, just closing off the part between Trill and
Station to all vehicles would divert traffic into that part of Nuttall,
which mostly isn't.

Imagine a truck going down Station Road and waiting to cross into Nuttall!

 

The shops in the LMR area all need deliveries from their suppliers, and many suppliers use vast vehicles. I thought about making a one-way along Lower Main, from Station to Trill - in that direction, and a one-way along Nuttall, from Trill to Station (i.e. in the opposite direction) ?? 

 

Another solution for us who live here would be for us to use Nuttall etc instead of LMR, and leave the lorries to fight it out among themselves. Has anyone ever made a "Commercial vehicles only" stretch of road?!

 

Would anyone out there be interested in getting together a two-meetings-maximum 'think-tank' about this issue?

Nuttall Road is just as congested with trucks delivering to the Spar, the Spar & Coke trucks are especially huge and have damaged the parking lot signs and bollards on more that one occation.
