It is encouraging to read (today's Cape Times) that Metro police have
been assisting homeless people in our area by inviting them to attend
an HIV-testing clinic at the Rotary building in Shelley Street. I
imagine this was facilitated in part by Home SPM, who occupy these
premises, and by the City's Health Department. The initiative for this
came from Many Lourens (Metro Area West 1). 48 homeless people were
tested on Friday and three tested positive. They received counselling
and were referred to the Salt River Community Clinic. Food and 'goody
bags' were also supplied to the homeless. This combined initiative
seems a good example of what can be achieved through constructive
cooperation. I hope for feedback at our Social Issues Forum meeting on
Thursday 29th.
