There was a kiddo that was getting around 60 MPG on a NON-hybrid tweaked version of the Honda CRX HF (High Fuel Efficiency), so you may want to add that to your list…

Subject: [illinoisEV]: Looking for a Generation 1 Honda Insight

Hey Guys and Gals,

Since buying my 2013 Ford C-Max hybrid in November for work (which I love by the way), I have begun looking for a small runabout that is ultra high mpg. To that end, I have decided to start looking for a Generation 1 Insight. I want to find one in the low price range of around $4,000 or so. I see them for sale on-line from time to time for that price or a touch less, but normally not close to us here in illinois. I am in no hurry at all. Sometime within the next year or so would be fine.

So, if you guys run across a decent deal on an Insight, let me know.

Thanks!

Matt

My 1986 Honda CRX HF achieved 47.5 MPG for the first 100,000 miles. The best reading for the 1985 was 62 MPG. Be sure to look for the HF model, which many complained of for being too slow on pickup. Many just had the CRX and questioned how mine gave better mileage than theirs--especially those with the SI model. That was a great car and should not have been discontinued. We owned two of them and they both gave us over 175,000 miles before we sold them. Would have liked to transition to the Gen I Insight but the difference in the price from $8,500 for the CRX and around $21,000 for the Insight seemed like a bad choice. Our tires (Michelin) lasted around 100,000 miles. Probably because the cars were lighter, around 1800 pounds if my memory serves me right. It helps when one does not have a lead foot. My son's average MPG was about 10 MPG less when he drove the cars.

We had a Chevette Rally that turned 4000 RPM at 60 mph and averaged 28 MPG, which people thought was great compared to their cars. Most people never checked their mileage or didn't care. Even today people complain when their hybrids get less mileage in the winter. Every car does that but many are surprised to learn that. The 1985 CRX HF turned 2000 RPM at 60. The 1986 turned 2000 RPM at 70 but one would have to stay in second gear longer and learn to get to around 1700 RPM before shifting into the next gear. That's why people said they were slow--they would shift too soon and would lug the engine. People shifted according to MPH rather than RPM. It made a difference in the performance (speed) but also improved the MPG. There were other small cars which people bought because they could not purchase a CRX and didn't want to wait. Many of them also turned from 3700 to 4400 RPMs at 60 MPH. It helps when a car has a tach so one can see how fast the engine turns at 60.
