Following the trend which Narendra started, I would like to share info
about these tools which I use, which I feel are great learning aids
for people learning Japanese on Linux. (stardict is a general
dictionary software, more about that later).

Disclaimer: The description of the tools is how I use them. In case I
am not using it as it is supposed to be used (please don't inform me
'cause I'm getting my work done :) )

Tool: Kiten
Homepage: http://edu.kde.org/kiten/
Screenshots: -
Description: You can lookup words in English or Japanese (i.e. find
translations, just like in a dictionary), search directly for Kanji or
attempt partial matches in hiragana/katakana. It also lets you look up
Kanji characters based on number of strokes and radicals appearing.
Oh BTW, it does/supports that whole Unicode mambo-jambo thing as well :)

Tool: KanjiPad
Homepage: http://fishsoup.net/software/kanjipad/
Screenshot: -
Description: A neat little handwriting recognition software for Kanji.
It helps a lot when you are reading manga and come across some
character you want to look up in the dictionary/on the internet. How
would you write that image in google? Use this to draw the character
and it will give you similar characters. Copy-paste into google!

Tool: Stardict
Homepage: http://stardict.sourceforge.net/
Screenshot: -
Description: A dictionary software which gives you the meaning
(something like a tooltip message) of the word highlighted in any
application! You have to add dictionaries first and they are available
for many languages!

And of course if you are into learning Japanese, wikipedia (Japanese)
and Wiktionary [http://wiktionary.org/] are great aids too!

I'm not mentioning scim here which I use for Japanese input.
