Human Rights and Trade/Economic interdependence

The IFLRY Office (in cooperation with the Bureau) is working on various applications for projects (read: seminars, study sessions) for 2008. One of the topics that have been brought up is to discuss human rights in the context of increasing economic interdependence, in particular trade relationships between Europe and countries with less admirable records on HR, but on which we are becoming more and more reliant (China, Russia, Middle East). Major question is: what can Europe do in order to (keep on) address Human Rights in its foreign policy while it is actually getting so vulnerable. Does it risk losing sight of her interests? Are there ways of integrating human rights in external trade policies? Or should we perhaps try to forget about states and 'interests' all together, and let civil society groups do their work / all the work for us?
It would be great if you could just give us some thoughts on what issues you think that we could tackle, within this framework of human rights and economic interdependence , during a seminar/study session. You don't have to, but if you can, try to link it with a certain method, that is: workshop, lecture, group discussions, etcetera. In order to get funding for such projects, we have to be creative, so don't hesitate to come up with more unconventional, original ideas.
