Real IRA boss may control Provo arms;
Gardai fear group has the engineering capacity to develop its own weapons
By LIZ ALLEN, Crime Correspondent

A SIGNIFICANT part of the huge cache of weapons held by the IRA before it
called a ceasefire may now lie in the hands of the man at the helm of the
Real IRA, the terror organisation which planted the Omagh bomb.

The provisional movement has informed the Chairman of the Decommissioning
Body, General John de Chastelain, of the amount of weaponry and explosives
it held prior to the ceasefire. But it is now feared that the former
quartermaster-general of the IRA, whose position gave him unrivalled access
to the IRA's secret stash of weapons and explosives, may be the only
individual with knowledge of the location of most of the armoury.

The anti-ceasefire man from Dundalk may have control over a long list of
weapons and explosives, according to gardaí. These include: 2,470kg of
Semtex, 550 AKM assault rifles, 35 Druganov rifles, 70 Webley revolvers, 45
RPG-7 missiles, 10 rocket-launchers, 14 Taurus pistols, 10 general purpose
machine-guns, seven flame-throwers and eight SAM missiles.

As former QMG of the IRA, the 48-year-old man was the distributor of
weapons to operatives before the ceasefire. He was ousted by the IRA
leadership during a bitter row over the Mitchell Principles in November
1997.

The news that the weapons may be under the man's control comes after gardaí
conducted a series of successful hits against the Real IRA whose numbers
have almost trebled since it regrouped following the Omagh bomb in August
last year.

Prior to the Omagh bombing, it was believed that the RIRA's numbers were in
the region of 35, but new intelligence is now pointing to a significantly
increased membership of at least 90 for the organisation, whose hardline
members include some of the best technical minds in what used to be the
IRA's engineering unit. Gardaí also fear that the IRA's former engineering
supremo, a trained electrician from Inchicore in his mid-20s who left the
RIRA after Omagh, has rejoined the group. He is continuing, however, to
work as a courier in Dublin.

The Garda Commissioner, Pat Byrne, said this week that his intelligence
officers are concerned about the regrouped RIRA: "We do know at this stage
that they have reorganised their command structure ... and have the
capacity in terms of expertise to manufacture their own home-made
explosives."

Referring to the campaign against the organisation which has resulted in
several arrests and seizures of weapons and explosives over the past month,
the Commissioner added: "It's their engineering capacity which bothers us."

Anti-terrorist intelligence sources are now examining a theory that the
weapons and ammunition seized in Co Meath over the past week may not have
been recently imported, but may in fact be the original IRA stock over
which the RIRA's Chief of Staff once had control.

In particular, they are concerned about the powerful RPG-18 Russian
rocket-launcher seized from the group, along with a Beretta sub-machine
gun, an AK47 rifle, a pistol and 150 rounds of ammunition.

Initially, gardaí believed that the Russian rocket-launcher never seen here
before may have been imported from the man's widespread contacts throughout
Eastern Europe, but they are now examining the theory that the man may have
been using the RPG-18 as a prototype to develop similar weapons.

"It's what the Provos did in recent years before the ceasefire. When funds
were low and when weapons became too expensive to purchase, he found
prototypes and developed replicas. You could say this was his forte in his
latter years with the movement," a senior officer said last night.

If you can read, you would know I am in full support of the current ceasefires
and don't think a return to armed struggle is viable for any group at this
point.

This is actually true. Imagine that some mad bastard could wreck half this

Well, I've *never* raised armed struggle to an untouchable principle, merely
believed it was a tactic to be used when appropriate.

That is very fucking thoughtful of you. Mind you I cannot help being a
bit put out by your enthuasiasm for the option of people being shot in
my country when you are risking life and limb behind your PC. Now
please do not get me wrong and do not take this the wrong way but you
make me puke. What if I supported the bombing of scyscrapers in New
York or government buildings in Oklahoma on s.c.usa? Seriously; would
you like me to do that? Please answer; I want to fucking know. There
is greater support in the US for the bombing of federal buildings that
there is for your fringe looney nobodies in this country.

This (where I live) is a real country with real people and this so
called armed struggle of yours means people get shot and injured and
killed and bombed. You just sit behind your PC arguing and making
pompous statements.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to explain to us when it is appropriate to
incinerate members of a local dog club at their annual dinner? When is it
appropriate to open fire with automatic weapons at Christians worshipping in
their church? When is it appropriate to bomb a remembrance service? When is
it appropriate to blow to pieces innocent men, women and children, even
babies in prams? I have seen first hand the results of what you call a
'tactic' you republican supporting bastard!

I would like to discuss your potential bi-sexuality in greater depth if
that's ok? Don't worry about Lee as my wife came to terms with my own
occasional desire to thumb through the IKEA catalogue while humming the
soundtrack from the Wizard of Oz. Any mountain can be climbed.

If you agree to this, I feel that it can be a very positive learning
experience for all of us. I strongly believe that you won't have
compomised any of your existing manliness if by the time this
exploration is completed you have a sudden urge to walk a pair a
Dalmations through McArthur Park on your way to return your Wonder Woman
'The Lost Episodes' videos to Blockbuster. This will only enhance your
personality and allow you to enjoy certain experiences that you would
have missed out on.

My fee is £200 a hour and I will conduct the session in a bad German

It is about time that people realised that the end is corrupted by the
means. If repression and murder is used to further an otherwise admirable
objective, then that objective becomes dishonoured.
Thus has Republicanism been besmirched.

I am referring to her pals in the IRSP and/or 32SM. If they were to
stand in an election here (luckily for them they do not believe in them)
they would be lucky to get a 100 votes. They are a fringe looney
movement and effin dangerous. In the US, there is considerable support
in local areas for anti government groups and Dannielle herself has said
she supports them. I was being extreme with the government building
thing (the US equivalent of Omagh) but both were part of what she calls
"armed struggle". She likes to keep an open mind about the use of this
"armed struggle" here which makes me puke.

Well at least he is not advocating the use of "armed struggle" in your
country. I think that is reasonably polite of him. You, on the other
hand, like to keep an open mind on the potential use of shooting and
bombing in my country and in our nearest neighnours. That, I find, a
little bit disgusting, especially as you will never have to suffer the
consequences of this little pecadillo of yours, safe as you are, several
thousand miles away.

Ehhhh, I would rather not seeing as I do not believe it is right to
plant bombs in order to kill people. What about Oklahoma? Was that
justified?? I am happy for you that you were not so perturbed by having
a building bombed in NY but I would like you to fuck off and stop
considering the "armed struggle" an option in my country. I think it is
a bit inconsiderate.

Padre (if that's what you are) Danielle's words are those of the ideologue
to whom the end justifies the means. The world, unfortunately for that
world, is filled with them. Flinty eyed revolutionaries murdered 16 bishops
and 6000 regular and lay clergy in Spain from '36 to '39 in the name of the
revolution. Did they have any real understanding of the revolution they
murdered so freely for? Hardly, since anyone with the slightest
understanding of history and human nature could clearly see that neither
Marxism nor anarchism would, could, work in a real world. So they killed in
the end for nothing. In a way it is impossible for them to be reasoned with
because the 'causa' has become inextricably interwoven with their own egos.
They ARE the movement, whatever that movement may be. They have been the
greatest cause of human misery since at least the end of the ninth century,
all the while proclaiming their intent to perfect or 'save' that world.
Communism, Anarchism, National Socialism, Nationalism, Marxism and exclusive
and expansive religious movements; a plague on all your houses!

Padre (if that's what you are), Danielle's words are those of the political
ideologue, where the end justifies the means. The world, tragically for that
world, is filled with them. They have been the greatest cause of human

the 'idea' or cause or movement has become inextricably woven together with
their egos. They have become, in a sense, the movement its' self. Most of
them do not even understand what they do. Communism, Marxism. Anarchism,
Nationalism, and exclusive expansionist religious movements: a plague on all

I thought you were referring to any support for nationalists...
I don't think you can really judge support by the ballot box either
because it's too political... When SF declared their desire for
peace, their share of the vote went up, but I doubt that all
those that voted for them actually would support them again
if SF declared that warfare was the only way forward...

I think the Federal building thing was terrorism because it was designed
to kill without warning, and it did... I might be more open to accepting
that it was a political rebuff of the system had the bomb exploded at night
when there was no chance of killing innocent children and yet a chance
to attack a symbol of the system...

I believe the IRA are now committed to peace and I can't see them
returning ot violence anytime soon... A good thing... While the guns
are quiet, the taking will prevail...

First the constitution of Ireland claims the whole island of Ireland,
they could use this as a basis for their activities...

The fact is also, that the British managed to split the Nationalist
movement into those who would accept 26 counties and those who
wanted all Ireland free from Britain... Those who have accepted the
26 are in the majority, true enough, but until there is a resolution to
the conflict, I guess there will always be those who won't accept
that part of Ireland is lost forever...

Nope fellas, the federal building bombing was a redneck weewee thing. A
bunch of dumbass boyos showing who had the longest. These nits had no
cohesive political ideology, nothing political to gain, no purpose in the
act. They felt disenfranchised, almost entirely their own doing. The rest
of it was too many boasts over too many beers and a little meth. You might
call them skinheads except there is no real equivalent movement as such in
the States. It boils down to an ego thing. Three of the same dragged a black
man who had done them no harm to death. Some of it might have come from
frustration; finding themselves so far down the social ladder that all they
can see is falling shite. You know the kind I mean.

Irrelevant. The constitution of the Republic does not give any basis for
any grouping to conduct ILLEGAL actions (illegal in both jurisdictions)
to fufill it in terms of articles 2 & 3.

That is your right as long as you use purely peaceful and democratic
means, but I have no time for anyone that uses violence to get their way
simply because they can't get their way using what everyone has to use -
the ballot box.

BTW why do you define NI as lost? Simply because it is a part of the
United Kingdom should not mean anything. After all, there are well over
a million Irish people living on the UK mainland. Are they lost?

Have you ever been to NI to see for yourself?

If your implication here is that NATO can be equated in any way with modern
terrorist groups, you must have found a hash bar in your neighbourhood. The
very fact that the recent action in Serbia took so long and nearly failed
altogether is proof enough of the extreme reluctance of NATO to use the
means at it's disposal to work it's collective will, even understanding, as
the member states did, that their reluctance would be seen by the Serbian
leadership and others as weakness. Neither can you equate the goal. If you
think for one fraction of one minute that the disparate interests
represented in the councils of the member states could have been joined to
the effort by anything less than extremis, you know nothing about the
dynamics of international councils. NATO was made aware of Milosovic's plans
to create a 'greater Serbia' by exterminating the Kosovars. His paid and
protected hit squads had been busy in Bosnia-Herzogovina for some time.
Nato's action was to save lives and protect itself from the condemnation of
history. No lesser goal could have gotten NATO off its' collective bums.

The whole point of the split was that some wanted to keep fighting
as before until they won total freedom... That mentality, right or
wrong, still prevails today in some groups... From what I hear
and read in the papers about the IRA these days, I'm becoming
more convinced that the IRA are now truely seeking a peaceful
solution... I can't say I'm unhappy about that...

Well, it would be lost to Ireland because I wanted to see it reunited
and a United Ireland... If we give up on that dream, then all those
who died before for it will have been in vain... I know you'll probably
counter argue about those that might die in the future over it..

It's not true. The bombers might have been a little more sophisticated, but
both are part of a very amorphous thing you can't even call a movement. I've
seen them called right wing anarchists in this ng, but most couldn't spell
the later. Because many of them are heavily into making and distributing
methanfedamines, they are shunned by the legitimate right movement which
tends to be almost exclusively ideological in the States. In the South the
overtones are slightly more white supremicist, in the Mid-West more
anti-establishment, but both share these caristaristics together with a
feeling of being outcasts from coventional society. I hope I'm making sense
here. I like the name too - thanks Gerald!

Eh? While I disagree with the politics of the right militia movement, I would
hardly say most of them are unintelligent. Amorphous? Most of the east coast
militia units are under a unified command structure. That hardly sounds
amorphous to me.

So what was your opinion of Sendero Luminoso (sp???) in Peru?? Their tactics
were two fold;
First, terrorise the civil population into being too scared to do anything
other than obey the rules of The Shinning Path. Then use them as a cover to
expand operations against government forces in the hope of goading the
Peruvian Security Forces, i.e. police, militia and army, into starting their
own attrocities against the civilians.

That the Peruvian Government, under the leadership of Fujimori, avioded this
was probably more a matter of luck in their guidance of the Security Forces.

The Kurds are following the same tactics and unfortunatly the Turkish
Security forces have fallen into the trap the Peruvians avoided.

That the ordinary Kurd is a victim of both the Kurdish Separatists and the
Security Forces, is something IRA/INLA has been trying to do to the
Nationalist population for years with, other than Bloody Sunday and a
relativly small number of rogue elements in the RUC, remarkably little
success.

IRA/INLA are very good at anti-Army/RUC propaganda whilst at the same time
being
totally ruthless in denying dissident elements withing the Nationalist
Community those same Human Rights they accuse the Security Forces of
denying.

From what I know these guys are about as dangerous as the Elks Club, w ho
are also 'organized'. Trust me they are way out of the mainstream of
conventional thought and have no lasting ideology. Recent attempts by the
Clinton folks to restrict gun ownership may gain them real adherants, a
viable issue and money. At the moment public sentiment in the States is
securely centrist with no room for whacko fringe movements. It's me saying
this, a strong ideological conservative of many years.
