All welcome
John Booth
Bitumen Artist
John Booth was born in 1942 and grew up in Glasgow,
moving later to Stockport where he worked as a roofer
for a local roofing company for 35 years.
Following his retirement,
he completed a course in Fine Art at Stockport College, achieving
distinction,
and was awarded the Gallery Award by Stockport Art gallery
for the most original painting in the 1998 College Exhibition.
Using his former tradesman skills with roofing materials,
he has turned 'the black stuff' into a vibrant means of artistic expression.
The intense semi-matt black, often applied in swirling lines,
increases the intensity of underlying colours
and can give a very rich glowing effect.
His abstract work is nevertheless drawn from nature
and maintains the flow and rhythm of natural forms and processes.
His show at the Blyth Gallery in August 2000 Manchester
created so much media interest that a return exhibition seemed inevitable.
John, a Glaswegian, has worked for 35 years as a roofer.
He is now an abstract painter who creates with bitumen,
a material he used during his time as a roofer.
John has a great affinity with the material,
which he boils and applies swiftly,
pouring, dripping and drawing the boiling volatile liquid onto the canvas.
The rhythm and speed with which John works
is reflected in the canvases he produces
which are full of life and momentum.
He is unafraid to experiment with shape, colour or line,
using vibrant colours that contrast with the lustrous bitumen finish
which suggest a futuristic stained glass window.
