remote iSeries connections

A few months back I started investigating using this project as a
database driver for Django apps to connect to our iSeries. The
research I have done so far indicates that I will need install the
"DB2 Connect" product on my web server.

We have recently upgraded our iSeries machine and I inquired as to the
cost of the DB2 Connect product for this purpose. Our local IBM
partner put me in contact with IBM and we determined which product was
required. When pricing came back on this it was over $20,000 US.

Is this the only option for accessing the iSeries remotely from
Python / Django applications? This seems a bit expensive seeing as
how we get other types of remote access (JDBC for instance)
essientially for free.

Jim,  I don't remember the specifics..   IIRC there were 3 pricing options..  This was the most flexible (and expensive).

This is all from memory so please don't hold anyone to it.  The 3 pricing options included 1) Unauthenticated users 2) Authenticated users (per user pricing) 3) any combination of un and authenticated users.   I only asked for pricing on #3 and did not price the others. 

Pricing was based on the web server hardware,  not the iSeries.  Our web server is running 64 bit Linux (Ubuntu) maybe 3-4 processors and 4G memory.  I am a consultant so I am not sure the exact iSeries hardware they are moving to,  but that was not a factor in the price.

The question remains however. Why are we being charged SO much for this access mechanism when others like JDBC/ODBC are essentially free with iSeries Access?

The folks (like me) who man these forums and provide responses are
developers and in no position (dont have the data) to validate or
correct these pricing options. However it might be a good idea for us
folks to get educated on these for future. In the meantime I have
asked the concerned folks to respond on these forums

I appreciate the position the developers are in.  It was my hope that I was looking at the wrong software and a more affordable solution was available.  Additionally I hope that bringing this to your attention will inspire you (IBM) to provide a solution like JDBC/ODBC that is not prohibitively expensive to implement remote Python database connection to the iSeries.

I'm also interested in this, and in searching for documentation
related to DB2 Connect, I came across DB2 Connect Personal Edition
(http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/db2/db2connect/edition-pe.html).
Will this version not suffice for iSeries remote connections? I can
connect easily using pyodbc and the ODBC API, but I've been unable to
even been receive a licensing error attempting to use ibm_db to
connect to a remote iSeries database (which is probably for another
thread).
