Overview
iBaReS is an easy to use integrated tool for backup and restore of iPhone and iPod Touch via Wireless LAN.
Apple's iTunes will only backup the standard settings and re-sync your media when doing an upgrade or you may lose all your data when a restore is necessary due to any reason.
For all "enhanced" (jailbroken) iPhones you have to re-do all 3rd party applications and settings after any firmware update. Therefore I developed iBaReS to save all your treasured additional applications, settings and data before and update/restore and easily put all the stuff back onto the iPhone without spending hours and hours all over again with the ever same tasks.

Features
Actually, doing the backup or restore is just a matter of 3 scp (secure copy) statements. But in order to make it easy to use and comfortable for what you might need it for, I added the following functions:
- Standard backup includes files and settings for both "root" and the standard user "mobile" and all applications
- Standard backup is incremental by default. Therefore, after the initial backup, every following run will be much faster because only changed files are copied again.
- Additionally, a full individual backup can be made and put into an archive in order to preserve different versions or installation states.
- Standard restore is also differential and therefore only restores files that have changed from the archived state.
- Additionally, a full individual restore from a specific archive version can be performed.
- *new* For individual backups and restores, the Scope of the targeted data can be selected between Applications, root files and user files (in any combination).
- *new* "Update mode" will preserve newer files during a restore to protect updated iPhone applications or to restore accidentially deleted files without setting back your other data to the (older) state of the backup.
- *new* Version 2.0 incorporates a comfortable communications setup that takes care of the bumpy RSA setup and resolves other compatibility issues of different unix tools distributions on the iPhone/IPT.
- *new* Support of 3rd party Frameworks, daemons and linked Application folders.
- *new* Localization for "German"

Usage Hints
- The IP address of a host "iPhone" in /etc/hosts will be set automatically
- Set the "Auto Lock" mode to "never" before backup or restore in order to prevent a network loss during backup operations.
- iBaReS does not check the validity/contents of an archive before restoring it to the iPhone/iPod Touch. Please make sure to select only archives that have been created by iBaReS for a specific restore! (Although it's unlikely that data of another zipfile will be restored to the iPhone because the archive must have the same folder structure).
- iBaReS can not damage your iPhone/iPod Touch! The backup/restore does not touch any firmware or baseband etc. on the device. So in worst case, another restore by iBaReS or a full restore with iTunes will heal any possible failure. (Although again, iBaReS never deletes data from your device and will only restore files that have been previously there.)
Requirements
iBaReS is available for Mac OS/X only and needs the following prerequisites to run properly:
- Mac OS/X 10.4 or later
- BSD Subsystem installed on iPhone/iPod Touch (via Installer / System group). Version 2.0 or later can handle compatibility issues with other distributions.
- OpenSSH installed on iPhone/iPod Touch (via Installer / System group)
- rsa-key trust between your Mac and iPhone (see i.e. this description); Version 1.2 or later includes now automatic setup of the RSA communication and is invoked as needed.
