Subject: Re: [IAMI] Topic of the month Feb 2012 - Journals

There are plenty of subtopics for this too!

*Accessing journals: Free vs Non-free access*

Free access through:

   - Specific journal websites (if you  know they are free)
   - Directories:
   - Medind (of NIC)  http://medind.nic.in
   - Directory of Open Access Journals - http://www.doaj.org
   - Indian Medical Sites -
   http://www.indianmedicalsites.in/browse_category.htm
(Choose category - Non Indian journals free to India
   - Medknow - http://www.medknow.com
   - PubMed - You get a "Free articles" filter on the right side

For articles that are not free online:

PubMed Linkout  for libraries

   - Every library can create a PubMed filter for its own collections of
subscribed journals. If the subscription is electronic AND IP authenticated
for the institution - any member of the institution can access them online.
Otherwise they may need to go to the library and access.
   - If the library has only print subscription, the Filter will at least
indicate what is available in the library

ERMED

   - The National Medical Library has access to appprox 300+journals
online. They have given access to a large no of Govt Medical Colleges to
   the same.

RGUHS - Karnataka

   - Has done an initiative similar to ERMED

Individuals who are not attached to libraries - it is still a big problem!

Dr Sahi

On our Foundation's website www.qmedkf.org.in - we have a "pre-tutorial" -
Introduction to Medical Writing

This is not a comprehensive one, but we have created it as an equivalent of
"Before you attend a Medical Writing / Research Methodology" workshop
tutorial

Please feel free to browse through it first. It can make a difference. In
the section - References and Selected Readings -
http://mw.qmedkf.org.in/selected-readings - we have mentioned other
resources too.

Others can add more suggestions

Dear Ajit...

Thanks for your mail....Yes you have raised a very pertinent question, as I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) but you have basically asked on what basis do you judge the quality of a journal....

Well in my personal opinion, I feel this is purely individual based, as opposed any specific generic criteria, so in my personal capacity I would judge the quality of a journal based on the content, and how good the practicality, and relevance of the content is to me in my professional life, and how I can use the information in it, another one would be the source of the publication, and off course the reputation the journal holds within the industry....

As I have written these are some of my personal criteria I look at, I'm sure everyone else will have similar or even different criteria for the same...

I hope that answers your question to a certain degree ?

What are your thoughts ?

Regards

Vivek

NMJI ( National Medical Journal of India) which is based in AIIMS had relased a small book called 'Better Medical Writing' way back in the 90s - and since Dr Sahi is there for the conference, he can ask them. The office is just next to the computer department.

Dear Ajit

I forgot to respond to your question. What Dr Sahi says is how most people
go though judging. There are some generic criteria however. The formal
criterion and most often used is the Impact Factor. This has a calculation
formula, but in conceptual terms simply means how much of an impact it is
creating by the no of times articles in it are cited by others.

If I have to share other simple guidelines - here are some: (none of them
is sacrosanct and no individual point alone is important, it is the
combination)

a) How long has the journal been around
b) Who/which institution is behind it
c) The constitution of the editorial board
d) Is it peer reviewed
e) Is it indexed in at least one well-known indexing system like Medline
f) How quick is their article management process
g) Overall - quality of content - both scientific as well as presentation
(Am sure there are more)

Today I have to add things like integrity!
Recently two students and I sent a paper to an "Open access journal" -
which on its website claimed that there were no author submission charges.
They took a long time to accept the paper (understandable) but would never
respond to queries in between. But what was bad was that after agreeing to
accept, they said we needed to pay $300 for publication. When one of the
students said that the journal website mentioned nothing and as students
they could not afford it, and also this was not based on institutional
research, they came back with an explanation of "We need to sustain costs".
(Which is logical, but then they should have mentioned that on the
website).

Then... when we wanted to withdraw the paper, they again would not write
back! Finally one of the students had to write a stinker and only then they
wrote back saying "okay please withdraw"!

I can only say I am learning more!

I had answered this in my first response. Is there something more
specific you wanted to know?
