Hi gang. We're planning on installing a new ground-based NTSC camera,
and I was wondering if there is current (or planned) capability in
the Display ActiveX control for displaying a separate (non-IADS)
streaming video input on the video player? It would be standard video
capture device with WDM drivers.

Thanks,
-Peter

Hi Peter,

Sure.. We have a product (IadsAudioVideoServer) that will acquire
video/audio, archive it to an AVI file, and broadcast it to a specific
"video channel" for display in an ActiveX video player.

In theory, it will work with any video capture card as long as it has the
correct DirectX drivers. So far, every video card we've tried has worked,
but we just encountered some strange problems on a WinTV card (still
working).

What kind of video capture device were you thinking about?

That's good to hear. We're using the Video Server for streaming
PCM-embedded video. I was hoping that it would handle other video
sources as well. We don't have a specific piece of hardware selected
yet, but our intention was to use an off-the-shelf USB video capture
device. If you can recommend anything that you know works, we'd
definitely appreciate it.

Thanks,
-Peter

I think this video server is a different "beast". Sorry for the confusion.
For some reason our development group was calling the embedded video stream
processor the "video server" as well. In actuality, the video server inside
of RtStation is just an embedded stream processing "class" that
operates/extracts video from a PCM source transport stream.

The IadsAudioVideoServer is a stand alone application that is in your
BaseTpp installation package. Actually, Wes might have installed it on the
server already, but if not, simply run the installation and search through
the "installable components" for IadsAudioVideoServer.

I would shy away from USB video capture devices. We've had problems with
those in the past (jitters, etc). Also, USB devices tend to compress the
video source before sending it to the PC because of bandwidth issues....
this leads to problems in the IadsAVServer as it really requires a raw video
input source. In essence, if the incoming acquired video is compressed, the
server must uncompress it and re-compress into the proper codec.

From past experience, we recommend Winnov cards:

Let me know if you have any questions,
Jim

Peter, there are actually 2 video servers from your perspective.

1) the integrated Acra PCM video decoder/broadcaster built into the
iadsTpp - This is specific to Acra's embedded video and I believe you
are already using it
2) the Standalone Video Server - this application is available to all
IADS-TELEM-BASE and IADS-TELEM-BASE-TPP users. It is available to you
in the Servers section while installing

It sounds like you want to perform some testing of number 2 from
above. The standalone server will interact with DirectX capable video
capture devices

Jim--

We've got the stand-alone video server installed and have a winnov
4400 AV card we'd like to try. The only question I have is which
driver to use. Winnov lists both VFW and DirectShow drivers. I
assume the DirectShow drivers are teh ones to use. Is that correct?

Thanks,
-Peter

Correct, DirectShow

Great! We've got video capture working now. My next question is on
time syncing. With PCM-embedded video, IadsTPP handles time syncing
of the video streams. How is time syncing handled with the stand-
alone video server?

Thanks,

At this time you will need to manually sync the resulting capture file
in post-test by assigning the IRIG time of the first frame when you
load the AVI file into a video player.

Michael--

Thanks a lot for the help. If you're looking for customer requests,
having an ability to sync this via an IRIG source automatically would
certainly be useful to us. We are running the video server on the
same PC on which we're running tpp/cds, if that would help.

Absolutely, customer requests are always welcome! Its on the list.

One word of warning about running it on the CDS...
At this time, Do Not capture the video data directly to any location
in the iads data directory. For that matter, no executable should ever
directly write data to the iads data output folder.

If you do, you will lose the ability to use any of the 'recovery'
functions available from the OpConsole/CDS. The recovery functions
will cause the CDS to attempt a rename of the output folder; if there
are any open file handles (due to an external program running) the CDS
will be unable to rename the folder.

In other words, store the data somewhere else, then at the end of the
mission you are safe to co-locate the avi files with the dataset for
use in post-test.

Sorry I'm a little tardy to the party today...

Just wanted to clarify a few things.

The postflight playback of the video is looking for video files called
VideoChannel1.avi, VideoChannel2.avi, etc in the IADS output directory to
match them to Channel1, Channel2, etc in IadsMediaPlayer. If it finds those
files, it'll automatically switch to them in playback mode and also assign a
start time that is indirectly based on the time found in the transport
stream. I'm not 100% sure that start-time-detection works with
IadsAudoVideoServer. Jim will have to answer that. ( He's on travel right
now so I'm afraid you're stuck with my guesses for now! )

Now, how far off this time is to IRIG time is anybody's guess but I wouldn't
be surprised if the Winnov card put the PC system time in its place. So
really this might be more accurate than you "guessing" the IRIG start time,
assuming your PC clock isn't that far off. I don’t have a way to test this
hypothesis so if you do try this approach, let me know how it works out.

Unfortunately having another process ( in this case IadsAudoVideoServer )
writing to the output directory does hamper your recover options from the
CDS, since the CDS will attempt to move all *.avi files to 'recovery'
directory. But if you make sure you shut down the video server before you
"recover" or "reset" the CDS, those files should get moved along with the
other video files.

I've got this issue fixed and we can ship you an update next week if you
want to try it out,

Ignore what I said earlier regarding the start time, Peter! I was looking at
the wrong chunk of code -- doesn't apply here.

Sorry for the confusion.
