For Taiwanese who do not use handwriting for Chinese input: why you must

Chinese input through handwriting is as easy as handwriting on a piece of paper.  Anyone who has a smartphone should already know this. 
Therefore, it is such a mystery to me that, now in  2012, few US-educated Taiwanese I know write Chinese in their electronic communications such as email.  

They would type invented English like Nan-fang Shuo when they mean to say 南方朔; Chen Yi-Sheng for 陳儀深;  Ts'ai-hsun for 財訊, and bo-dua bo-se for 沒大沒小.   It is hard to write such English.  Readers take a long time to decipher Chen Yi-Sheng.  誰是陳一陷?  Many will never figure out what bo-dua bo-se means.  

People write 100% English even when they have difficulty expressing themselves in 100% English.  Someone criticized such phenomenon bluntly as follows:

雖然大家為了鍵入方便，喜歡以英文溝通, 但我發現大多數人在專業以外，對英文的理解能力是大有問題的，或者根本不花心思去理解，所以我以下以中文書寫 ...

If you have avoided Chinese input, please try it now by handwriting.  Three things can happen: 

• You will find it to be so easy.
• You will make your writing accessible to those people who do not read English, making you so much more influential. 
• You won't lose your ability to handwrite Chinese because you will do it regularly.  In contrast, those people who do not handwrite Chinese stand to lose such ability.

Below is what I wrote in a private communication earlier :

it （中文打字） is actually very easy, because it is "pinyin", it follows the sound of English alphabets.  For example, typing "taiwan" gives you 台灣，"keshi" gives you 可是,  "buyao" gives you 不要, etc.

So anyone familiar with the English keyboard can easily pick that up. 

If you r interested and have time for some practice, take 5~10 minutes to visit:

Turn the left panel to Chinese and check the box [ ] 允許以拼字方式輸入

and you can start typing. Don't even have to install anything.

The role of an "input method" is to serve the purpose of idea exchanges. So, IMHO, the only critical factor is:

--- Don't choose a method that interrupts your flow of thought. Doing so will only kill your desire to write more;

In that sense, the pinyin is a good way to start for oversea Taiwanese.

我完全同意您的看法，畢竟台灣人自幼受中文書寫的訓練，在中文的表達上都可能不夠精準，更何況是英文？我以前以注音輸入時也是不習慣，但是記憶注音鍵盤位置的方法與記憶英文字母鍵盤位置的方法相同，只要打久了，習慣了就會越打越快。

 

不過，還是希望未來能學會閱讀台語文與書寫(輸入)台語文，如果未來"iLoveTW"的人都能以台語文溝通，那對台灣會是甚麼樣的影響？這就不用我多說了。這有待成大台研所蔣為文的推廣，先讓"iLoveTW"上的台灣人、台美人習慣與看懂台語文文章，再推廣輸入法，一步一步來。

I venture to say, without elaboration, that English should take precedence over all non-Mandarin Taiwanese languages (all of which enjoy equal status) and Mandarin.

 

As for this forum, I would urge that we write in Mandarin and plain English mostly.  Remember the article in Holo posted b Echo last week, which was almost unreadable to me.  It is the thought, not the language, that counts!

 

Also, what is “台語文”?  It should also include Hakka and all aboriginal languages (even Mandarin).

 

No more Holo chauvinism, please!

你講的可能是注音輸入法裡面的倚天鍵盤吧？光是注音輸入法就有很多鍵盤安排方式，如果我沒記錯的話，倚天鍵盤應該是比較接近英文鍵盤的，但還是沒有拼音來得像英文鍵盤。

能說、寫、讀台語文，當然是最好的方式，但，就如我上個禮拜 demo 的一樣，目前不但讀很痛苦，寫更是。 對一般想要表達想法、溝通想法的人來說，花那麼多時間寫，看懂的人又不多，在這個時代，實在很不切實際。

那些叫別人要寫台文、甚至因為別人寫漢文或不寫台文就批判的人，恐怕自己都沒有用台文在寫，只會要求別人。幾年前有一篇文章在批判現在台灣年輕人都不講台語，說講台語是成為台灣人不可或缺的要素。荒謬的是，那整篇文章卻是用漢文寫的。用漢文寫一篇批判別人講漢語的文章，實在很諷刺。

I would like to look at this issue from a much wider perspective.  Below is a proposed language policy for Taiwan:

 

1.       Official languages:  Mandarin and English.   (All government documents are required to include both languages; there are no other requirements, at least initially.)

 

2.       Both official languages must be taught in elementary school from day one.  (Replace Zu Yin symbols with English alphabet-based phonetic symbols, which would facilitate simultaneous learning of the two languages.)

 

3.       All elementary school students must also pick and learn at least one of Holo, Hakka, and other Taiwanese languages.  (To lessen the burden on students, the same English alphabet-based phonetic symbols, should be used.)

 

Mandarin has to be kept as an official language not just for historical reasons but also for economic and political reasons.  On the other hand, national English proficiency is our way to speed up our integration into the world to counter Chinese aggression while minimizing influence by bad elements of Chinese culture.

 

For harmony and also for diversity, we should show respect to all Taiwanese of different ethnic backgrounds by helping them preserve their mother tongues on equal basis.

 

Even if this policy is adopted today, we probably would not see its fruits for decades.  We really should start as soon as possible, regardless whether the DPP or the KMT is in power, for a more affluent  and more secure Taiwan.

It's an outstanding plan. The only part that might not workable is the teaching of English from the elementary schools. We don't have enough teachers. But, again, like you said, it will take decades to achieve, if we do have the chance to apply it. 

Maybe take teachings as the second stage. The 1st stage just puts English in official documents.  

Anyway, great great plan.
