Pulled from the trash last night: One big-ass hunk of bulletproof plexiglass.
Approximately 6' long, 2' wide and a least 1.5" thick.
The guy throwing it out said it came from a bank.

Looking for ideas for what to do with it. Alternately, I'm willing to give it to anyone with a sufficiently awesome use for it.

Build it into a metal frame and use it for experiment protection a la mythbusters style.  Would be nice to have another as 2' is kinda skinny.

I have an idea, I could carve the i3 logo into it, we could edge light it and hang it up in the space somewheres.

...and build it into a new door, to replace the floppy flimsy piece of
junk currently keeping the outsides out. Should get quotes on a new
frame, too.

There's something kinda awesome about making bullet-resistant lexan
front door.

I like this too. My concern is that it may be too heavy for the frame.
But that's a problem worth solving.

I'll bring the material in this weekend.

Yea, but 2' wide isn't wide enough for a door. Doors are typically 30" wide.

(...and for security reasons, you really do NOT want to let people case
the joint through a transparent door, to get the idea that you may
wish to break in... The door may be bulletproof, but the frame et al
won't keep them out if they wish to break in.)

My thoughts:

- Just reserve it for now, for slicing up into a few replaceable machining center
viewports, or windows for whatever other mad science "experiment holding box"
you may later dream up. (Make one, plus a few spares for when the first
one eventually gets too messed up... :-)

- I like the edge-lit I3 sign idea. That would be very cool.

You may actually have enough material there to make slices
for a series of of edge-lit "<foo> Area" Departmental signs
(like "Woodworking", etc.) Keep the remainder cut up as blank
stock, for future topics when I3 comes up with a new department.

In any case - To protect it until you can come up with some cool use,
I'd advise immediately wrapping it in Saran Wrap, to keep it from
getting too scratched up while you dream about applications.
It should only takes one dollar store plastic food wrap roll, to deal with that.

  • I second the Logo Idea as well.
  • I also think the door is a bad idea, someone may even want to steal the door itself once it's lit up and cool looking.
If it's what I think it is, that's the same stuff they use at hockey rings... they crack those all the time and it's great project stuff. If it's from a bank however it may be some kind of layered **** which will be much more difficult to work with.

That hockey ring lexan is great, usually about 3/4". I've used it to make battery compartments, speakers boxes, etc. Just be careful drilling or taping it because you can see any mistakes but it would carve very nicely with the lazer cutter or a CNC machine. They have special (spiral shaped) plastic bits for dremel tools which work nicely on it too.

FWIW, if its glass, its bullet resistant at best.  I got a chunk from a Brinks truck that had been in an accident, and put a hole in it with 9 rounds of 9mm ammo.  It was either the 2nd or 3rd round that sent shards flying from the back side of the glass.

Not to say its weak by any means, but it may be a concern depending on intended use.  I believe the blast shields that are used by the Mythbusters is a completely different animal, stuff that won't shard like that.

its not glass it is 2" thick lexan.  see:   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lexan

it does not shatter like glass, lexan taking fire looks something like this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7ChXBjxyFk&feature=related

but i agree it may be too heavy for the door frame.

I brought the material in question to the shop last week. It is 1.25 inches thick.
It is currently in the vertical sheet storage rack on the west wall.

Please rest assured that if and when the piece is incorporated into a new door, that due consideration will be given to security and durability.
