Sometimes you only need a few I/O pins for a project, so an Arduino is kind of overkill, but the Digispark might fit the bill nicely:
  • Support for the Arduino IDE 1.0+ (OSX/Win/Linux)
  • Power via USB or External Source - 5v or 7-35v (automatic selection)
  • On-board 500ma 5V Regulator
  • Built-in USB (and serial debugging)
  • 6 I/O Pins (2 are used for USB only if your program actively communicates over USB, otherwise you can use all 6 even if you are programming via USB)
  • 8k Flash Memory (about 6k after bootloader)
  • I2C and SPI (vis USI)
  • PWM on 3 pins (more possible with Software PWM)
  • ADC on 4 pins
  • Power LED and Test/Status LED (on Pin0)
Depending on your pledge level, they're ~$9 each, including shipping.

(I'm a backer of this project, but have no personal stake in it beyond that)

Anyone want to go in on one of the higher levels?

How high? I'm already in at the $45 level, but I'd contribute towards
another, higher level too.

Was thinking the 200 level to have a bunch of these on hand for people
to use for projects. What do they mean by shields? Doesn't look like
those things have any room! I've got several projects where a full
Arduino is overkill. These would be perfect!

I'd kick in towards that level. I assume the shields are just cute
postage stamp-sized boards, but I may be wrong about that. ;)

I would kick in some too

I remember an article several years back about the 555 getting replaced with
a Tiny. This is a step closer to that.

About Shields -
The main kickstart page has a link (not so obvious, it is a link though) to
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digistump/digispark-the-tiny-arduino-ena
bled-usb-dev-board/posts/289122 showing the shields they have designed in
advance for this. Where they additionally state that once you become a
backer you will receive an email with a link that will allow you to amend
your order with the shields.

SMT Proto Shield
Infrared Shield
Grove Shield
Motor Driver Shield
MOSFET Shield

I was thinking about how awkward it is to coordinate group buys of
things, and about what it would take to put together a simple platform
that would let people buy in at their own level and then finally place
the group order after some time limit had passed. Then I realized I
was reinventing Kickstarter.

Since the discounts are relatively modest (the 3-spark price is $9.33/
ea, and even at the highest levels they never go below $8/ea), I think
it's easier to just pledge individually. Not gonna try to dissuade
anyone else from ordering as a group, just explaining why I'd rather
avoid the hassle. Plus a bunch of individual backers means we can each
individually use the comment system on Kickstarter...

That being said, at least one of mine is gonna live in the electronics
room, with "do not remove from e-room" written on the back. If we each
order a handful and contribute one or two, the group will still end up
with a pile to play with.

We're gonna need some USB hubs. ;)

I was just looking at the same numbers, Nate. I think you're right. I went in at the $45 level, and will donate one of my units to i3 for group use.

If someone goes in at the $205 level, I'll kick in for 10 of them, but I'm not signing up for their (Kickstarter) terms of use because of this clause:

"You shall defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the Company, its affiliates, and each of its and its affiliates’ employees, contractors, directors, suppliers, and representatives from all liabilities, claims, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys' fees, that arise from or relate to your use or misuse of, or access to, the Service and Content, or otherwise from your User Submissions, violation of the Terms of Use, or infringement by you, or any third party using your account, of any intellectual property or other right of any person or entity. The Company reserves the right to assume the exclusive defense and control of any matter otherwise subject to indemnification by you, in which event you will assist and cooperate with the Company in asserting any available defenses."

Bump. ;)

Plenty of other hackerspace members are piping up in the comments
section. You know what to do...

Did we ever get any of these for the electronics room? I'm standing in Microcenter right now and they're selling for $10 a pop.

Yup, in the Arduino bin there's a bag with three of them, along with two digishield protos and a digishield boost.

Got a project in mind? Hack away! :)
