Anyone interested in a python class + hack session? Maybe a 2 day thing? We can just steal the videos from: http://code.google.com/edu/languages/google-python-class/ and work through the exercises as a group. I think I could host it, but I would need a few python experts on hand to answer questions. I've taken this before and it's a great crash course. I'm still very much a python beginner-intermediate though.

Who are our python gurus?

Don't have the time to look at the links right now, but am curious...would this be suitable for the non programmers as well?

Depends what you mean by "non programmer".

if you don't know any computer language, it's probably doable if we go slowly.

If you know a bit of any other language (c, java, whatever) but don't really program as your day-job, you can pick this up easily.

The class basically just teaches you how to hack together simple scripts to scrape webpages, or parse and sort text files, etc. Very quick-n-dirty but practical stuff.

I'd be interested in this class, as a student, rather than an instructor.

Eric, Python was originally designed as a pedagogical programming language to replace Pascal, while still being useful as a general purpose programming language, unlike BASIC or Pascal.

I'm responsible for running the Python classes at All Hands Active and
have worked with the language regularly and professionally. I might be
able to help you guys out if it's a time when I'm free.

I don't have any formal instruction in Python, but I use it day-to-day
at work, used it extensively working on my master's thesis, and
consider myself at least an intermediate-level user. I wouldn't mind
coming and hanging out during these lessons, get to know the crowd a
bit and maybe offer my help if I can.

Sounds like fun! Learning python's been on my bucket list for a while;
I've done some simple stuff but nothing really interesting/useful. If
the time/date works for me, I'll be there!

I am interested as well.

I would be happy to teach general object oriented programming for
beginners, I am not an expert in python yet but I plan to use it in
the near future and it's always more fun as a group.

The curriculum from last Fall's course is up at:
http://www.allhandsactive.com/2010/09/the-importance-of-being-pythonic-programming-class/

I wrote all my own examples, and generally just use a projector and have
folks bring their own laptops to follow along.

The content and format of this could all change depending on the class
make-up. At AHA we usually aim for "omg i've never ever programmed
before" for these classes, but if you were all comfortable procedural
programming and the difference between "an integer", "a string" and "a
collection", we can kind of start wherever. In addition, if there's
something specific you're all interested in learning, we can work that
in too.

Of note as well is a class coming up at AHA, taught by our own Xander
Honkala (who I believe started his adventures with python at one of my
courses), which uses PyGame (a python SDL framework) to teach
rudimentary game programming. That takes place all throughout December,
and more info is available here:

I don't have any formal instruction in Python, but I use it day-to-day
at work, used it extensively working on my master's thesis, and
consider myself at least an intermediate-level user. I wouldn't mind
coming and hanging out during these lessons, get to know the crowd a
bit and maybe offer my help if I can.

Sounds like fun!  Learning python's been on my bucket list for a while; I've done some simple stuff but nothing really interesting/useful.  If the time/date works for me, I'll be there!

Sounds like there is plenty of interest. I'll get something planned in the next month.

I am interested as well.

I would be happy to teach general object oriented programming for
beginners, I am not an expert in python yet but I plan to use it in
the near future and it's always more fun as a group.

The curriculum from last Fall's course is up at: http://www.allhandsactive.com/2010/09/the-importance-of-being-pythonic-programming-class/

I wrote all my own examples, and generally just use a projector and have folks bring their own laptops to follow along.

The content and format of this could all change depending on the class make-up. At AHA we usually aim for "omg i've never ever programmed before" for these classes, but if you were all comfortable procedural programming and the difference between "an integer", "a string" and "a collection", we can kind of start wherever. In addition, if there's something specific you're all interested in learning, we can work that in too.

Of note as well is a class coming up at AHA, taught by our own Xander Honkala (who I believe started his adventures with python at one of my courses), which uses PyGame (a python SDL framework) to teach rudimentary game programming. That takes place all throughout December, and more info is available here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=281528215203624

Count me in (assuming a suitable date and time); learning Python has been on my bucket list for a long time as well.

I would be closest to "don't know jack", yes :P Like many kids, I did
BASIC/QBASIC in high school, but that was well over a decade ago, and
I doubt I'd be able to do much beyond the Hello World program now (not
to mention it really doesn't compare much to modern languages
anyways).

I'm not expecting college level educations here, just kind of a rough
intro, get the basics down kinda thing.

Just to whet folk's appetite if anyone's a real eager beaver, you might want to check out the MIT Opencourseware page for their introductory Computer Science course which is taught entirely in Python. It's far less about the language and more about PLC, but it's a good way to brush up on your skills if they've been sitting idle for too long as well as a good way to get your feet wet in Python before a class.

Thought I'd throw it out there, if you're looking for something sorta fun to play with while learning python's workflow more, the 3D modeling program Rhino recently upgraded and its scripting methods are in python now rather than visual basic. Just google Rhinoscripting to see what can result from this, might not be super useful per se but i3 does have a laser cutter and cnc mill, you could use it as a learning excercise and get some cool stuff in the mean time.
