Is there planned support for adding columns to existing tables?
As BigTable is column-oriented, Google can support adding columns to
tables without requiring that all rows have a value for that column.

Yes, support for dynamically adding columns is on the roadmap. As you say, because of the column oriented nature of the system, adding columns will be very fast.
