The mind, your mind is an amazing thing - it has the ability to
process information at such a speed it is astounding, unfortunately in
a confrontation the mind freezes. We have been conditioned since the
beginning of our time on Earth that we are geared for one of two
things 'fight or flight' - that is probably a term which you are
familiar with.
When this occurs your body realises a threat to your existence and
starts to gear itself up in preparation for it - your heart beats
faster which pushes blood and oxygen throughout your body, adrenalin
is distributed through out your system and your vision starts to
become focused on the one thing which is in front of you. Your body
has automatically prepared itself with everything it needs in which to
either run from the danger or take on the danger.
This is an automated reaction and your body will react like this on
numerous occasions - at times without you being aware of it.
However as a martial artist you have to try and train to react in a
different manner, millions of years of built in training need to be
supressed so that if a confrontation does occur then your mind will be
clear and your body relaxed so that you are able to react effectively
to whatever is coming your way. Once or twice a week in class will
help, but to really progress your training you need to train outside
of the Dojo. When you learn all the techniques and the moves you are
also training your mind and your body to react automatically.
