I'm in the process of gathering info and photos/old postcards dealing with the subject of blind hurdy-gurdy players (Lirnyky) from Ukraine.

The history of the lirnyky is intriguing as it is tragic, culminating in their planned "elimination" during the purges of Stalin in the 1930's.

My particular fascination is for those wandering lirnyky that roamed Western Ukraine (incorporating parts of Eastern Poland and South Belyrossia as boundaries changed in the course of history).

Factual evidence exists in the form of early photos/picture postcards not to  mention cylindrical recordings.

Perhaps you or others on your mailing list might have something of interest to help me in my quest to gather as much visual info as possible. Early postcards/photos were certainly sent from Ukraine to Poland,Moldova, Hungary. Bylerossia and to Europe generally.

I am aware of and strongly recommend all hurdy gurdy enthusiasts to read the book by Natalie Kononenko entitled "Ukrainian Minstrels - and the blind shall sing". -

Check out on the net;

www.Brama.com  -  Arts and Culture  -  Music  -  click on the yellow book entitled Ukrainian Minstrels

Anticipating your help in this matter and hope to hear from you in due course.

Thanks

Perebendya

Maybe you can contact Andrey Vinogradov, maybe he did some investigation
in that direction.

Hello Perenbendya,

I am sorry that I can not give any help to your request, but I have a question for you:

You write:

Are these recordings made available in some way?
I am interested in these recordings: a friend of mine is a singer in a Dutch choir specializing in traditional Ukrainian music (especially religious songs) and we want to work together (with me on hurdy gurdy). I know the Lemko-Ukrainian songbook, music of that choir, a few recordings of hurdy gurdy playing and singing on Youtube, but would like very much to hear historic recordings of Ukrainian hurdy gurdy players-singers.

With kind regards

Ernic
