Last weekend I was able
to participate in an excellent workshop with Dr.
Robert Green on Baroque
music for the hurdy gurdy. Above all, I was reminded of the meticulous
attention to detail which is requisite to playing
music of the era--not
only the ornamentation and the other 'condiments', but
also details of
instrument maintenance--cottoning, dog design and
strings.
I didn’t realise you had just been taking a baroque course but I am pleased you found it inspiring. This will bring the hurdy-gurdy into a new era, taking us back to the main stream of 18th century music. It is not an easy study but will reward those who persist. I would very much like to have attended so that I could meet you all, but England is too far away.
My little essay was not intended to be a full study. But I would like to add that I find it easier to play this repertoire on a small instrument of 18th cent design, with a string length of 35cm. and a small wheel. These features make the ornamentation easier and lighter. In setting up your instrument you should aim for the melody string to be as light and quiet as possible so that it may be expressive, in contradiction to its use as a folk instrument.

The weekend was a good success! Fourteen of us from Boston
to North Dakota
and points in between, excellent teachers in Tom, Juan, and Robert. Mel
Dories was on site as well, so the maintenance discussions were interesting
and useful. I particularly liked the helpful and supportive
atmosphere--very encouraging and informative. Lovely setting, as well.
Only drawback: nobody was ready to go home. Thoughts are, I think, to
extend it by a day or so next year.
Wish you weren't quite so far away....

I remember being there for the planning meetings a few years back, so it is
